A short cut for STF by using Histogram
« on: 2009 May 08 08:52:51 »
Hi Juan,

I was watching the one of the video tutorials which showed use of real time preview and histogram for setting the STF parameter.  It was a drag and drop multi step process.

Why not have short cut button to transfer the settings right on the histogram window without even opening the STF function?

I would also be helpful to know that STF is active and a way turn it off right on the histogram module or perhaps on the image window too.

I envison the following.

Make a  button  on the histogram that transfers the histogram settings to STF when the RT preview is what you want.  The button would change colors when STF is active.

For example,  the button changes from gray to an orange highlight on the histogram after the STF data is transferred to actual image.

You can press the button again and STF is deactivated. The histogram button goes back to grey and the images reverts. Also, you know on the histogram that a STF is active.

I would actually duplicate the same button on the normal image window too similar to the RT button.
This helps you know a STF is currently applied and convinent way to turn it on or off.

What do you think.

Max

Hi Max,

Thank you for these suggestions. The STF tool has undergone important changes and improvements for v1.5:

The new STF provides zooming and panning features that allow you to fine tune STF parameters with the same accuracy as the HistogramTransformation tool (or even more). In addition, STF now works in full real-time mode so you see changes over the image as soon as you move the sliders (previous versions updated the image when you released the mouse).

So in my opinion there's no need to use the histogram<->STF transfer trick anymore (although it still works of course).

Regarding an STF indicator or toggle button on image windows, version 1.6 will introduce fully configurable skins, including customizable window widgets and workspace windows (this is my intention at least). Developers will be able to write custom PixInsight skins with our standard development tools (PCL). For this reason I've made little changes to image windows in v1.5.

Hi Juan

The STF looks much improved and look forward to seeing it ,   Did you give any thought to the LOG stretch idea for STF ;)

Hi Harry,

I think a logarithmic stretch isn't necessary, since the new zoom feature allows you to define STF parameters with extreme accuracy. I tend to prefer staying linear  ;D

Skins? We need no freakin' skins!  >:D

Unless PI is being turned into an expensive MP3 player of course.

Damn! You catched me!  >:D

No, don't worry, I am also against these silly things :) The term "skin" isn't probably the most appropriate to describe what I intend to do; I've used it just to abbreviate.

The idea is to make PI fully configurable in a modular way, by means of a special type of module (then we'd have three types of module: processes, file formats and "skins" (or whatever is called)). The current preferences-based system to customize fonts, colors, etc. isn't an efficient solution, and doesn't allow things like toolbar customization for example. With a few PCL classes we can have a powerful yet simple workspace styling interface. This is the idea. A lot of design work is needed, so all ideas are welcome (as always)...

PI v1.6  ???  ???  ???

NO - I say. NO

Juan, you need to rest.

In your absence, your friends and colleagues here on the Forum have built for you a small room, on top of a tall mountain, far from any people. It has no roof, nor does it need one. Instead, a huge slab of perfect glass has been carefully fashioned to magnify the heavens for you, so that you may relax and take in the wonders of the night sky.

Of course, come daylight, the sun will fry your eyeballs out  >:D

So, you can start on v1.6 on Monday, before the sun rises. (And, whilst we are on the subject, will v1.6 have an integrated eMail client, WordProcessing and Spreadsheet/Database functionality ?)

 ;D

Inevitably Zawinski's lowlaw will reach PixInsight ;).

FWIW, it seems many of the messages in this thread didn't make it into the RSS feed...
