"Access violation" PI will not open?
« on: 2017 August 21 08:36:43 »
Win 10 Home 64 bit
PI v. 1.805 1353

Encountered this the first time Aug. 20. PI would not open and error notification appeared:

"Access violation: invalid memory read operation at address 00000000000000"

Tried again and it opened.

This morning though, it will not open at all.

Uninstalled and reinstalled v.1353. Same behaviour. PI will no longer launch at all.

Rolled back to v. 1.8.04.1195 and error did not appear.

This cannot be reproduced, and does not happen under normal working conditions. This must be a system configuration problem (bad graphics drivers, missing or wrong system components, wrong or incompatible system utilities, etc). I suggest trying on a different machine and/or on a clean Windows 10 installation.

Without more information, such as system error messages or error logs, we cannot help with these issues.

Thanks, Juan.

This puzzling behaviour persists with both v.1152 and 1153 of 1.8.05 on my main machine. I'll have to live with 1.8.04 on it I guess. I installed 1.8.05.1153 on another Win 10 machine without incident. But it's a lap top and inconvenient to process on.
In all other respects, the main machine seems normal.

I am experiencing the same issue with a Dell Inspiron 5000 series laptop running Windows 10. I installed 1.8.05 v.1152 and intermittently got the "Access violation: invalid memory read operation at address 00000000000000" when trying to open the program. Upgraded to v.1153 and was still intermittent on opening until it finally just quit and consistently presented the error. Rolled back to 01.08.04.1195 and no longer experiencing any issues. I know previous versions had issues with compatibility running on Dell laptops when attempting to open an image so thinking this may be along the same line.

As noted above, I cannot reproduce any of these problems. This has nothing to do with the problem we (and many other applications) had with wrong Dell utilities and version 1.8.4.

I cannot help without more information. The only advice I can offer is trying on a clean Windows installation and/or a different machine.

Further pertaining to this matter, I seem to have found the culprit.

I am running Win 10 on a machine with a 1TB C drive. The drive was "only" 78% full. I was starting to experience inexplicable slow downs on just about everything. Just opening an explorer window was taking much longer than the usual instantaneous interval.

In an attempt to speed the machine up, I cleaned up the drive. Even a seemingly small amount of extra space resulted in the slowdowns disappearing to the point of being unnoticeable.  Vast improvement with the drive 73% full vs. 78%! Seems my particular Win 10 machine goes over a cliff, performance-wise, somewhere between 73 and 78% C drive capacity!

I cleaned it up some more, offloading more files to another drive.

Decided to try PI v.1.08.05.1193 again, in a spirit of "who knows?"

Seems to run fine! The memory allocation error has disappeared.

I appreciate how unlikely this sounds but it seems to have fixed the problem in my case.
Might be of help to others experiencing a similar problem.

I installed PI on another computer a few weeks ago and it installed correctly.  Later I opened it to check on something and there were 3 updates available that I did not install at the time because I was out of town on a public wifi.  Today I tried to open PI to install those updates and I get the Access Violation message mentioned in this thread.  Computer is a win 10 64bit.  Any suggestions?

Is there somewhere I can re-download version 1.8.04?  I am having the same Access Violation problem.

Thanks

I repeat that reducing my 1TB HDD to less than 75% of its capacity fixed my Win10 problem with the latest PI version. I have not seen this MA error since doing so.

To any still experiencing this error, how full is your HDD, and what is it's nominal capacity?

Hi all,
I've got the same problem on my new mini PC (is only for use with telescope, but it would be great having PixInsight running for some very basic processing):

It is an Intel Atom, with 8 GB RAM and a 64 GB SSD Disk (Yes! it's very small  :D ) more then half empty.

It's a brand new installation of Window 10 64 bit.

I always have "Access violation: invalid memory read operation at address 00000000000000" un startup, a few seconds after "Creating Workspaces" appears on the "splash screen".

I cannot figure out how to make it work.

Pi runs smoothly on my Other PC and laptop.

Ideas?

Thank you Edoardo

Edoardo

I would check that you have all your updates installed and all drivers are also up to date. I have a secondary machine that is somewhat similar to your. It's a fanless MiniITXsystem that uses a 4 core Celeron instead of the Atom. Here is a screen shoot. I use this across my network with VNC. I don't do hard processing on this machine because of the limited resources.

Thank you Mike for your advice,
At the moment I've solved the problem installing the previous version of PI (01.08.04.1195): this is not a big issue for me since Im' using PixInsight on ths PC only as an advanced "image viewer".

Bye

Hello there, Folks.

I've been using PI for many months in the same machine. Windows 7, i7, 8 RAM, SSD.

Out from nowhere the error "Access Violation : invalid memory read operation t address 00000000000000" stared to appear.

I simply can't open PI anymore. That is really strange.

It seams there is no solution. So, my mesage's goal is just to inform the issue.

Best regards,
