PixInsight 1.8.5 crashing on Ubuntu 17.04
« on: 2017 August 06 18:29:54 »
Hi all,
Tried installing PixInsight 1.8.5 on my Ubuntu 17.04 (yes, I know, it's a bleeding edge version) machine and got the error dump below. PixInsight 01.08.04.1198 is running fine on the system. Any thoughts as to what the problem is? Just looked at the third line on Google it looks like PI is trying to start an external process.

Thanks in advance,
Bill Clugston

HI Bill, welcome to the forum

Does it works if you lunch PI without installation? Go to /opt/PixInsight/bin/ and double click the PixInsight.sh file

Saludos, Alejandro.

Re: PixInsight 1.8.5 crashing on Ubuntu 17.04 -- Solved!

Hi Alejandro,
I found the problem. When I compared the new PixInsight to the old PixInsight bin directory none of the files were marked executable. A bit odd since I installed as root. Maybe some strange interaction between Ubuntu 17.04 and the install script? Anyway, after I marked everything in the bin directory as executable everything works fine. Much faster than 1.8.4! Very nice!

Thanks for the reply,
Bill Clugston

Good work Bill - it is always worrying to hear of issues on release of new software, and always a relief to hear that the issues might not be a function of the software itself !

At least your detective work might help others (perhaps even Juan, who might want to look at your case in more detail - if he gets the time!)
