What platform do you use most often with PixInsight?
« on: 2009 April 29 09:49:01 »
Hi,

I'm curious what the OS/Platform distribution is here among active users. I know Juan can tell which binaries get downloaded but that's not necessarily the same as the readership here.

If you use several platforms please select your most often used or favorite. If you're using X and are about to switch to Y feel free to select Y.

Thanks for participating!

Thanks to you for taking the time to set it up. I'm tempted to make it sticky...

How about requiring users signing up to this forum to vote here as a requisite? ;)

I have already voted, but ... when the 64bit Mac version becomes available, do I get to vote again?  ;)

I voted Mac 32 because I did not know a full OSX 64-bit is available? I have 10.5.7 and I do not know if it is a full 64-bit version; it does some things in 64-bit.

Just to give additional feedback..

Currently running a laptop and a desktop with 32-bit Linux.  Will be moving the desktop to 64-bit.

I'm using Gentoo as my distribution

My desktop system specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU (Q8200) running at 2.33 GHz
     8 gig of memory
nVidia GPU GeForce GT 120 with a 1 gig of memory.
around a tera-byte of disk spread across several drives

Cheyenne, can you post your impressions of 64bits linux vs the 32bit one? I have a 64bits capable machine and was thinking about switching myself.

Hi,

the word width won't have a dramatic influence on speed. It simply affects how much memory PI can allocate. So as long as PI is not running out of memory on your current system you won't experience a big change going to 64 bit.

To me it is important to be able to run PI at the same time as other software without swapping. So the higher memory capability of the OS itself is just as important to me as the bigger memory space of individual applications.

Hi Sander,

I've just been reluctantly forced to switch to 32bit Vista. Its not as bad as I thought it would be....I may actually be growing to like it.

I'm not sure if I can still add to the Poll?

Cheers

Hi Simon,

I've since switched to Vista x64 and I can't change my poll either so I wouldn't worry about it :)

Vista wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. I still bought a Win7 upgrade when they went for $50 a while ago but I'm not sure if I'll install it right away.
Best,

Hi all,

I have been using Vista64 Home for a year now - and it has been perfectly stable. Like you, Sander, I am waiting for the opportunity to fire up a Win7 64-bit install.

Cheers,
