Where is MultiscaleLinearTransform?
« on: 2017 May 24 15:04:54 »
I have been reading online tutorials as well as Warren Keller's Inside Pixinsight book (2016) on noise reduction. I keep coming across references to the MultiscaleLinearTransform utility but I don't see it in my PI. My PI is up to date according to the pulldown Resource > Updates > Check for Updates. Version 01.08.00.1023 Ripley (x64) RC7

I have MultiscaleMedianTransform but that is not the same thing.

Also, Keller says MultiscaleLinearTransform is under the Wavelets menu but that menu contains:
ATrousWaveletTransform
ATrousWaveletTransformV1 (obsolete, I guess)
HDRMultiscaleTransform

ATrousWaveletTransform and HDRMultiscaleTransform are under the MultiscaleProcessing menu along with MultiscaleMedianTransform.

I'd appreciate some clarification.

Thanks,
John

Hi John,

You should be able to find this using the following :

Process / <All Processes> / MultiScaleLinearTransform

The process window looks like the attached image.

Hope this helps.

sometimes PI "loses the handle" on different processes - they are not part of the PI binary itself but are stored in separate library files. i think you can force PI to find them again by telling it to search for new processes, which IIRC is at the bottom of the process menu (i am not in front of my PI computer right now so i can't find the exact steps...)

The closest thing I can find at the bottom of the Process list is
Modules > Install Modules
Favorites > Load Favorite Process Collection...

Neither of these point to MultiscaleLinearTransform

Install Modules points to C:/Program Files/PixInsight/bin but shows no modules in the list.

Load Favorite ... points to my Users subfolder. I searched for .XFPC files under Pixinsight but found none.

I did find C:\Program Files\Pixinsight\bin\MultiscaleProcessing-pxm.dll, referenced as MultiscaleProcessing, under Manage Modules. It is checked along with all the others in the list.

try clicking "search" in the install modules dialog and see if it picks up the dll.

i guess if that does not work, try disabling MultiscaleProcessing-pxm.dll and restarting PI, then re-enable and restart again...

Under Resources/About PixInsight... I get a popup that says my version is 01.08.04.1195 Ripley (x86)

Under both the Process/Multiscale Processing item and the Process/Wavelets item I have 3 things: HDRMultiscaleTransform, MultiscaleLinearTransform and MultiscaleMedianTransform

It looks like you need an update of some form

Major releases are usually not available through the update system and have to be downloaded.  Here's an extract from the email announcing 1.8.4:

Quote
*** How to Install the Release

This version is not available through the update system. You have to download the appropriate installation package(s) for your platform(s) from our Software Distribution system:

   https://pixinsight.com/dist/

Simply uninstall your current version and install the new one:

* Linux: Uncompress the .tar.gz archive on a directory under your home directory, then run the installer program as root from a terminal. Answer "yes" to the confirmation question and you're done. The old version (if any) will be removed, and version 1.8.4 will be installed on the /opt system directory by default, as usual. Graphical shortcuts will be created automatically on most X11 desktop environments, including GNOME, KDE, Xfce and LXDE.

* Windows: Uninstall the current version if you have it installed (this is necessary!), then run the new installation package, and follow the instructions. Once installed, you'll have a new entry on your Start > All Programs menu (or equivalent item on Windows 8), namely PixInsight Platform, where you'll find an option to launch the PixInsight Core application.

See also FAQ Section 3 for important information about installations and updates:

http://pixinsight.com/faq/index.html#3_Installation

Download and install it, then apply any new updates via "check for updates" and you'll have the latest.

Cheers,
Rick.

Thanks, Rick. That did the trick. Rob, no worries. I appreciate everyone's prompt feedback. That must have been some upgrade to require an uninstall. Is there a reason the installer doesn't have the uninstaller built into it? I'm running on Windows so maybe there are cross platform constraints?

Since I have your kind attention, I had forgotten my pwd so I went through the reset process. I was provided with a default pwd . I used it and got the upgrade but I would like to change the pwd to something of my choosing. I've looked all over and have found no instructions on how to change it. Would you please point me to the right location?

Thanks again,
John

Hi John,

I have a feeling that you can't actually chamge that password (but I may be, and often am, wrong).

I certainly know that I have created copies of critical initial passwords, etc., for PixInsoght, and keep them in a safe place un my PC (and they also exist one my multitude of external and secondary backup drives as well - just in case).

Thanks for the feedback, Niall. That seem a very odd state of affairs. I have noted the new password. The odd thing is that when I first tried to log in my user ID and password fields were already auto completed but they were rejected. Hmm...
