Pixinsight Crashes on various operations
« on: 2017 May 08 08:46:30 »
Ever since the last major update PI has been crashing at random times.  The computer is a Surface Pro 3 running Windows 10.  Most frequently it was crashing on a dynamic cropping operation but last night it crashed just before I started do do a Richardson-Lucy deconvolution.  I had just made a range mask and that mask was in place and enabled.  Deconvolution was loaded and I had set the parameters to those for which I have had success.  PI completely froze up and I had to go to the Task Manager to kill PI.  I have attached a screen capture of the message.

My Mac version of PI runs fine.

Thank you for getting me onto the Forum.

Hi Ray,

This is a known problem with some machines on Windows 10, especially laptops, with high-dpi touch screens. Steps to fix it:

1. From the main menu, select EDIT > Global Preferences.

2. On the Preferences window, select the Core UI Resources section.

3. Uncheck the Automatic UI scaling option.

4. For the UI scaling factor parameter, an appropriate value should be 1.5. You can enter a different value later if desired, for example 2.0.

5. Press F6 or click the blue sphere button to apply.

6. Exit PixInsight.

7. Run PixInsight. The problem should be fixed. If you think the fonts and icons are too small, repeat step 4 with a value of 2.0 for the scaling factor parameter.

Let me know if this helps. Of course, nothing of this will be necessary with version 1.8.5, where these problems are fixed.

Thank you, Juan for the quick reply.  Your fix worked and I have not experienced any new crashes and I managed to complete the decon process I started.

The high-dpi screen on this computer has been somewhat problematic for me...not so much with software but with my eyes!

Thanks again.

I have been suffering from the same problem.  I have an iMac with a 27" display, operating on a boot camp drive (Windows 10).  Also a Surface Pro 4.  This is great information.  The solution seems to work for me, too.

And, I have the same problem Ray does with my eyes on the high resolution!  I think I'm going to need special glasses.

All the best,

John
