Debayer problem with DSLR raw

I'm new to PI.  I've been having a lot of problems following any of the tutorials out there.  I think I've traced it back to debayering.

This is a bit of a NEF taken from a Nikon D750:


This is it converted to XISF using the "PURE RAW" setting in format explorer:


This is the XISF debayered:


Shouldn't debayering the raw file get me back to a color image more or less what I started with?
