SWP files removal
« on: 2016 December 22 07:55:40 »
hello

Just a question are the tmp swap files supposed to be removed when close down PixInsight. If so they do not on my Mac so is there a setting in Preferences to do that on closing?

they should be removed. but if PI crashes then they are not removed and you'll have to delete them yourself...

Hi Rob

I just heck on machine I do PI on and the swp files are not removed. I closed the program 3 hours ago and when I go to the folder where the swp files r they are still there. Do I need tto check something in preferences or wht\at?

yeah it can take quite a while for PI to quit, due to the time it takes to delete of all the swap files. if PI crashes those swap files are "orphaned" and they never get cleaned up. check the creation dates on the ones you see - they might be quite old.

Hi rob

Thanks for that information I was tested that as I waited for your response. So can not just close and reopen PI right away and can not even force quit because it seems the swap files than become orphaned.

I wonder why it takes so long on a Mac. I just tested this on my older Windows 7 computer. I have 2 SSD's for the swap directories. I first cleared any orphaned swap files in those directories. I loaded a previous project. I checked to see how many and the total size of the swap files. I had almost 600 files totaling 7GB. When I exited PI the files were deleted in 2 seconds and PI closed a second later.

Hello Mike

I have a SSD drive in the laptop and swap file directory was on the laptop but still takes a couple of minutes to close fully. I can see that the application is not responding for a period of time and eventually closes completly. I do not know why!!!!

maybe it has something to do with how the HFS+ filesystem works... i dunno. it is quite old. apple is preparing a new file system which is pretty much state of the art. i don't know if it's reached "first class" status in sierra - i seem to remember that they are not yet ready to make it the default.

Steve,

these files are normally deleted when PI closes.
However, since sometimes they are not deleted, you want to have them in a place where you can easily check.
Periodically I will check the temp Directory, and clear it out.
After PI crashes, you always need to clear the temp directory.

i don't think so, the entire filesystem is a fiction anyway, there's no real difference between any directory...

PI can take a long time to quit on Windows too.  It keeps running in the background after the PI window closes.  Perhaps the difference is that the window stays around on OSX until PI exits?

I have a small SSD that is only used for PI swp files.  I have never needed to clean it up, so I have always assumed that PI cleans up the old swp files when it needs space.

Cheers,
Rick.

Rick

On my Windows machine looking at the task manager PI never takes more then 5 seconds to exit completely. Now I do have PI the executable and all PI associated folders including swap folders excluded from my virus protection. Maybe that is why I have no delay.
