unable to open a saved integrated image
« on: 2016 December 03 12:37:21 »
I am a newbie to Pixinsight and tried to integrate a series of just 40 lights off of am8300 SBIG CCD camera (no flats, darks, bias).  I debayered the images BGGR, then Star aligned, then Image Integration.  After integration, I "saved as" to a folder but when I go to open it up, it gives me a message as to whether I want to "uninstall.exe" .  Do I allow that?  Seems counterintuitive.  So I do not did not do that but I cannot open the saved .xisf file.  I also saved it as a .fit file but cannot open that one either.

I am assuming I set something wrong to begin with but not sure where I go from here.  Help please.

How are you trying to open the files?  Did you start PixInsight then use the File>Open dialog?  If not, please try it...

Cheers,
Rick.

Thank you so much for your reply Rick.  My image does open when I went to Pixinsight - file - open. However from a real weird standpoint, when I earlier went to the image in my saved folder and clicked on file - open without having Pixinsight open and then chose "look for another app on this computer" and I then chose  Pixinsight and then chose the only application file it showed namely "uninstall.exe", it gave me the following message:  " do you want to allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your device?"   the choice is "uninstall.exe".   I had and have been reluctant to hit "yes".   Almost sounds like I always have to have Pixinsight first open in order to see a prior saved image.  Very different from other apps where I can go to my saved photos and hit open and it gives me a choice whether I want to open with say Windows Photo Gallery, Photoshop, or some other app and then opens the actual image.

Separately how can I send a screenshot to a friend of the opened .xisf file. That person has been giving me some guidance as a newbie and wanted to see what my image look like after integration before post processing.

Lastly, I never received an e-mail notification that you had replied to my message.  Is there a way to set my settings that would notify that response occurred?  Thank you.

Rick - I did figure out how to create a png file out of the xsif file using Paint.  I then forwarded the png file to my friend.

You should be able to browse to the PixInsight.exe file (probably in a location like "C:\Program Files\PixInsight\bin\PixInsight.exe") to set this up.  That works for me but I rarely use PixInsight to open a random file like this.  I usually start PixInsight and then load files or projects as needed.

Separately how can I send a screenshot to a friend of the opened .xisf file. That person has been giving me some guidance as a newbie and wanted to see what my image look like after integration before post processing.

Looks like you managed to do it though I don't understand exactly how or why you'd need Paint  :)  The easiest thing to do would be to save another copy of the image from PixInsight using "Save As" and set the "Save as type" to JPEG, PNG or whatever is convenient.

Lastly, I never received an e-mail notification that you had replied to my message.  Is there a way to set my settings that would notify that response occurred?  Thank you.

Sorry, I haven't seen an option anywhere to enable notification when there's a reply in a thread.  Someone with more knowledge of the forum software might be able to help.

Thank you.  I never thought I could save it as a jpg as it might alter the look drastically but I will try that.

by the way, along the bottom and top of the thread page are a bunch of buttons... next to "reply" is "notify", and if you click that button you should get an email when someone posts to the thread. i tried it earlier today and when you posted just now i got an email. so if that's not working, check your profile for a correct email address.

Again Rick - am following up with the message from you from Dec regarding the PixInsight.exe  missing file.  (I also clicked on the Notify me so I should this time see your reply timely).  I did look for PixInsight.exe  under Program Files and all I see is the uninstall.exe file.

Hi Nolan,

PixInsight.exe should be in the "bin" folder one more level down, e.g. on my system the full path is C:\Program Files\PixInsight\bin\PixInsight.exe

Cheers,
Rick.

There it is Rob.  Thanks.  But why does every time I specify to open a file with Pixinsight (not from within Pixinsight itself), the uninstall.exe file always opens?

I'd say the Windows file associations are messed up.  Buried in the Windows settings somewhere you can choose the default app to open each type of file (defined by the file extension.)  Check that looks OK.

Rick - you are exactly correct.  In Settings, it shows uninstall.exe for xisf and xosm files.  But when I try to change it, it takes m to the App Store and of course, Pixinsight is not an included option.  Anyone have ideas as to how to change it from uninstall.exe to Pixinsight.exe.

If you're confident with using the registry editor, it looks like the file associations are stored here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ApplicationAssociationToasts

Alternatively, here is a free program that lets you edit the file associations: http://downloads.tomsguide.com/FileTypesMan,0301-33500.html

Use either suggestion at your own risk.  I can't guarantee they won't delete your files or set your computer on fire.

Cheers,
Rick.

Thank you Rick.  Although I could not makes sense out of either of them, as I was searching Registry Edit, I found    Control Panel    All Control Panel Items   Default Programs  Set Associations.     THAT DID IT!!!!!!!  Thanks!
