ATrous Wavelet Transform
« on: 2016 August 05 01:48:58 »
Hi,

After Cropping, Dynamic Background Extraction, Background Neutralization, and Color Calibration I then run ATrous and the image looks fairly decent.  After doing a Histogram Transfer & Screen Transfer Function the image turns horrible with blotches of color across the image.  If I do the HT & STF before ATrous, the result is fine.

Is Atrous a "Linear" or "Non-Linear" function.  It is most likely that I am doing something wrong, so any pointer in the right direction would be most helpful.

One other thing, if I click on  the "Browse Documentation" in some processes I get an error "Tool documentation not available".  Any ideas?

Regards
John

what are you trying to accomplish with atrous? it has many uses. it's also considered to be obsolete in favor of MMT and MLT. are you using a mask when you apply ATWT?

also some processes don't have built in documentation...

John

To give you an idea of just how old ATW is here is a screen shot from PixInsight LE Ver 1.02 2005. ATW was around back then. Myself whenever I am looking for tool specific information I will always do a web search with the exact name of the tool, a space and followed by PixInsight. This always yields the best information. Many times the very first response will be either the description that Juan writes up and posts in the forum releases about the tool or a page within the main PI website.

The problem with all tutorials is as software evolves tools become obsolete. Tutorials are rarely updated or even mention that a tools is obsolete. The obsolete tools are no longer updated but they are not removed because you might have an archived project that requires the old tools.

MMT and MLT look and work in much the same way as ATW, only better. There isn't a large learning curve to using those tools in comparison to ATW.

Hi John,

the image turns horrible with blotches of color across the image

I think ATWT do not generate those blotches of color (except you were working with chrominace as target). The most possible is that came from DBE.
You can check it after DBE with a more agressive streching modifying the default parameters of STF tool.

Is Atrous a "Linear" or "Non-Linear" function.

Both.

Saludos, Alejandro.

Thanks for the heads-up, guys.  I am now using MMT & MLT.  Perhaps the PixInsight developers should have an "Old Tools" menu section and not have the old and new mixed up .... ;)

Thanks again
