Nikon NEF file formatting

Good morning.  This question may very well be a simple "the-more-you-look, the-more-you-see" type of question.

When opening a single NEF image file it opens as Gray image and at some steps when zooming in or out the image has a repeating lattice appearance. The checked settings in the Format Explorer are "create RAW Bayer CFA image", "no image flip" and "no white balance".  Is this simply because the image has not been de-Bayered and the data to draw a smooth image is not unlocked?  The image looks expected without the lattice when opened in Abode Lightroom.

that is correct, the file is undebayered. if you want to debayer it after it's been opened as CFA, you can use the Debayer process.

the reason PI can do this is that calibration of DSLR images should be done on undebayered images. after calibration, the images are debayered and then registered and stacked.

Thanks very much for the explanation.  When I saw the structure it clearly had to be related to pixel architecture.  I've opened images like this in the past but only glanced at them so never noticed the lattice.  The procedure you've described is what I've been using and preprocessing and processing have gone smoothly. The program on the whole has been pleasure to use.
