Slow Star Alignment?
« on: 2016 July 03 15:04:11 »
I don't know what is going on, or why, but all of a sudden in the middle of my BPP script run, it has taken ages for PI to detect stars and align them. I am stacking 96 images out of a DSLR, and it aligned the first 30-40 or so very quickly (maybe 30 minutes or so), but now it is taking 15+ minutes an image with the detecting stars going about 1% every 15 seconds or so. I don't believe I am limited by my system currently either since it is a decently built computer I built only two years ago and none of the resources are closed to topped out. Everything else on my computer is also closed out of. I am using an i5 and 8GB and currently PI is only using 30% of the CPU and 1GB of RAM.

It is currently on image 60 of 96, but it seems to only be getting slower. Can I end this and continue it in the Star Alignment tool without having to realign my images already complete? I am assuming that will require using the same reference image at least.

Anything I can be doing to speed this up though? Was hoping to edit this image by tonight, but it is going on 4 hours of trying to just register these images.

If you need to know anything else about my setup, please let me know. For reference, I have stacked a bunch of images before and I can't remember it ever taking more than an hour to get through registration. Maybe because these are really high SNR images / dense star fields it is taking longer? But that doesn't explain the sudden slow down unless I just didn't notice how slow it was going before. Although I am like 90% sure I looked at it around an hour in and saw that It was on image 35 or something.

If you need to know any other details please let me know.

Thank you for any help you guys can help with.

EDIT: It has now been stuck on 1% of image 61 for the last 10 minutes. Now on 5% after 40 minutes total.

EDIT 2: This seems to be going no where. Going to restart it and hope for the best. I'll let you guys know what the results are of restarting.

EDIT 3: Image 3 of 96 took 20 seconds to register completely. Seems to be back to normal for now. Not sure if it will slow down again later though.

EDIT 4: Slowed again at right around 30 images again.

EDIT 5: Redoing it and decided to delete my Temp folder, had to delete my anti virus to do that (weird, dunno). That and I checked for BPP to integrate my frames. This time seems to be working. Not sure why, but all appears to be well as I am now on image 60 without it slowing down yet.

It could be your hard drive where your temp/cache files are stored might be full or very close to full. You might also look at your files in the Blink tool to see if there isn't a strange problem.

I checked them all in Blink before stacking to make sure I didn't have any wacky stars. I was at 135mm focal length, so it was pretty hard to mess up! My hard drive has 330GB free, but my temp folder is over 4GB. If I delete my temp folder right now, will it mess up the current alignment? That is assuming you mean the %temp% folder is the one where PI is storing/pulling from.

Thank you.

EDIT: My disc usage is 0mb/s apparently from PI. Should it be running right now?
