PixInsight 1.8.4.1197 for Linux Released
« on: 2016 February 18 09:43:53 »
Hi all,

We are glad to announce the release of a new version of PixInsight: 1.8.4.1197 for Linux. Installation packages are now available to all users on our software distribution system.

Version 1.8.4.1197 is a bugfix/maintenance release for Linux platforms. The main improvements in this version are compatibility with glibc 2.22 (used by Fedora 23 and other cutting-edge distributions) and the latest versions of KDE Plasma 5, along with other bug fixes. We encourage all our Linux users to update their installations as soon as possible.

How to Install the Release

This version is not available through the update system integrated with the PixInsight Core application. You have to download the appropriate installation package(s) for your platform(s) from our software distribution system:

   https://pixinsight.com/dist/

Once downloaded, uncompress the .tar.gz archive on a directory under your home directory, then run the installer program as root from a terminal. Answer "yes" to the confirmation question and you're done. The old version (if any) will be removed, and version 1.8.4.1197 will be installed on the /opt system directory by default, as usual. Graphical shortcuts will be created automatically on most X11 desktop environments, including GNOME, KDE, Xfce and LXDE.

See also FAQ Section 3 for important information about installations and updates:

Main Bug Fixes

- Fixed a bug that was causing a crash with immediate program termination on platforms using glibc 2.22. This mainly includes Fedora 23.

- Fixed several issues on the latest KDE Plasma 5 versions.

- On the View Explorer window with its extension hidden, newly loaded or created images were not generating new items in the main tree list on the left panel. This has been fixed.

- Files with white space characters in their file names were failing to open when launched from an external application, such as a desktop file manager, or passed as command-line arguments from a terminal as a result of wildcard expansion. This has been fixed.

I hope you enjoy this new release. Thank you all for your continued support.

Hello Juan,

this version 1.8.4.1197 is unable to show the FITS header content: the window named FITSHeader is opened, but there are EMPTY Name,Value,Comment fields only.

Kind regards
Martin

Did you really open a Fits file.
Opening a TIF file and looking for the fitsheader gives this empty window
as TIF do not have Fits Data imbedded.

Hi Gerald,
yes, I did... open a FITS file.
I reverted back to version 1.8.4.1195, started PI and installed the six updates, opened the very same project, and from there the very same file again: the  FITS header content was shown as expected.
The I updated to version 1.8.4.1197, started PI and installed the update, opened the very same project, and from there the very same file again: the  FITS header content was NOT shown as expected. Furthermore, I doesnt matter if  I only opened a file from the File menu, or one from the list of StarAlignment Target Images, no FITS header content was shown.
This all happens with version 1.8.4.1197 for Linux. Does it work for you (if you run Linux at all...) ?

Martin

Bug confirmed. I'll fix it tomorrow; thank you for reporting it, and sorry for the inconvenience.

This problem only affects the FITSHeader tool, that is, FITS header keywords are correctly loaded and written, it's just that they are not shown by this tool. As a workaround, you can select the image and enter the lskwd command on the Process Console window to see a list of keywords.
