I can report exactly the same problem on my iMac running 10.10.3.

Some more info. I purchases PI yesterday and installed it first on my Powerbook running 10.8. After the initial installation and start up of application I could also successfully download and install the 15 pending update packages!

I then installed PI on my newer iMac and run into exactly the same error message "unable to install ... can't find required components" when the application exits and tries to install the updates. I also tried to reset the download directory from /tmp to /Users/galileo/tmp but no success either.

Did anybody reply to you?   I have had no response from PixInsight and now regretting my purchase.  I should have just purchased something for Windows and emulated.   For such an expensive piece of software, to have no help/support is frustrating.

Not speaking to your Mac issue as I don't have a Mac but your license allows you to run any version, Windows, Mac, Linux or FreeBSD. You can run all at the same time if you wanted. So if you are thinking about running another software package under a Windows emulation you could just do the same with the Windows version of PixInsight. This for me was one of the big selling points to PixInsight for the price.

Section 2 of the FAQ has more information. Specifically 2.5 and 2.6 speaks to this.

I hope this helps a little.

Hi, as I am not a Mac user I cannot help too much here. Only to add information I have checked with a couple of friends with versions 10.10.3 and 10.9.5 and they are not experiencing any issue.
Saludos, Alejandro.

This is just a file permissions problem. Our update system needs to copy two executable files (PixInsightUpdater and updater2) to a folder outside the PixInsight.app application bundle. For some reason (of the 'to protect you' kind) some of the latest Mac machines have been configured in a very restrictive way that prevents this copy, even on the user's home folder. This can be solved by just fixing access permissions. A good solution is creating a new user with administrative rights, simply because the default file access permissions applied to newly created user profiles are correct.

The next version of PixInsight, on which I am working hard since January, won't have this problem because the executable files won't be copied on OS X. However, incorrect file access permissions will always cause problems on all platforms, not just on OS X. On Linux and Windows these problems don't happen because system security mechanisms are simple, well defined and work very well (UAC and elevated execution privileges on Windows; setuid and setgid flags on FreeBSD and Linux). On OS X these things are fuzzy, and simple tasks such as copying a file to a different folder from an application become problematic.

So sounds like I have to just not get updates until the next version comes out.   I have so much installed each with its own agglomeration of created files under my one user, that switching users back and forth when switching between apps just is too inconvenient.   I have 10.9.5 installed, and tried everything I could to set the permissions right.  PI seems to not run under my own user when clicking on the app.  I sudo chown'ed and sudo chmod'ed until I was blue.   Used the Info interface as well and still nothing.

Just have to hope I wont run into an issue not having the fixes.    I am a beginner at PI anyway and I'm sure the fixes are for advanced stuff.

The updates are absolutely essential. I am going to upload a special installation package for OS X with all the updates already applied. As soon as it's available on the software distribution site, I'll let you know here. Then you'll just have to remove the original application and replace it with the new one. This will keep you (and all users with similar problems on OS X) up-to-date until I can release a new version.

Hello,

Just purchased a commercial license this evening and experienced this same issue. Unable to apply the updates because they "cannot be found". Concerned there's no response since July 2015 to this problem. Sort of regretting dropping 230 Euro.  Please advise

Just because there's no post in this thread does not mean there's no action. See http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=9193.msg59034#msg59034

Support is always excellent on the forums. Hang in there!

Jeff,

I just ask for a bit more of patience. I am having a tough time working on the next OS X version with good high-dpi display support. It is a nightmare because I am having to solve numerous bugs and compatibility problems in critical development tools (Qt, in particular). I am now very close to a new 1.8.4 version for OS X, which will be available for testing in a few days. Sorry for the long delay, but I am working very hard (too hard, in fact) to get this work done ASAP.

Thank you Juan.  If you would like I'm happy to act as a beta tester in the field, as I have two Macs.
