Why is it surprising? Painting black over spurious image structures to build a control image (a defect map in this case), when the structures are perfectly identifiable, is just a practical approach. I see no problem at all. This is similar to fixing small image defects with the CloneStamp tool, when the defects in question are clearly smaller than the PSF of the image and don't cause conflicts with significant features.

Why is it surprising?
Because I have always thought of PixInsight as being completely self-contained and not needing the use of any other software--one of its many great strengths. This idea seems to be strongly encouraged by the "Read this before posting" stickies in Gallery and Image Processing Challenges.
