Ripley 1.8.4 running error after installation
« on: 2015 August 05 03:40:36 »
Hi all,
after installing 1.8.4 on my Ubuntu 12.04, PixInsight refuses to run. Once tested from console:

./PixInsight.sh
/opt/PixInsight/bin/./PixInsight: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.17' not found (required by /opt/PixInsight/bin/./lib/libssl.so.10)
/opt/PixInsight/bin/./PixInsight: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.17' not found (required by /opt/PixInsight/bin/./lib/libcrypto.so.10)

Not sure on how to fix - it seems I've to compulsory upgrade to the last UBUNTU version. But this is my work PC, full of development packages...any advice?
Thanks in advance

Federico

As far as I know there is no way to provide an old OS with a newer glibc version. It is closely coupled to your OS version. So you either have to upgrade Ubuntu, or ask Juan to compile PI with an older glibc, or you run a newer OS in a virtual machine.

Yeah. Installing a newer glibc is not recommended. I once tried, and ended with several problems. I just upgraded.
I don't know how it is working on ubuntu right now, but the past upgrades of the system I did using Fedora were pretty much seamless. I just faced some problems related to the graphic controllers, but overall, everything worked better.

Another option: how about adding an HDD (or SSD) and installing there a newer version?

Hi Federico

Version 1.8.4 of PixInsight for Linux requires glibc version 2.17 or later. Ubuntu 12.04 (April 2012) is definitely a bit on the dated side.

In September we are going to change all of our development machines to RedHat Enterprise Linux 7, which will replace Fedora. This means that glibc 2.17 (released December 2012) will be required by all future Linux versions of PixInsight for a long time.

Hopefully, a 1.8.4 version of PixInsight for OS X will be released in September. However, we are facing very complex code adaptation problems and bugs in third-party development tools, which require a lot of coding and testing work, so I am not completely sure.
