Screen Resolution problem in new Update 1.8.4.1168
« on: 2015 August 01 20:56:41 »
Juan,

I have run into an issue with the new update.  I use a Samsung 880Z laptop with an Intel HD 4000 graphics card and chipset. I have it set at 1920 x 1080.  I often hook it up to my Dell U2711 Monitor for detail work. I loaded the new update while hooked up the Dell.  It also displays in 1920 x 1080 so that the image is the same as that on the laptop monitor, just bigger.  However, when I disconnected from the Dell and went back to my laptop monitor, while everything else still shows in 1920 x 1080, in PixInsight I now get a much lower resolution, like 640 x 480, though no where on my system does it show what that lower resolution for PixInsight is (my screen resolution from the display tool in the control panel still shows 1920 x 1080).

On the software side, I am running Windows 8 with Stardoc's Start8 to mimic the old Windows 7 environment.

Note this issue never occurred under the previous version.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim,

For some reason your Windows is telling PixInsight that one of the monitors is working at high-dpi resolution when it doesn't. Go figure why. Other applications don't get affected because they are not dpi-aware. When this happens, you have to configure screen resolution manually:

- EDIT > Global Preferences
- Preferences > Core UI Resources
- Disable the Automatic UI scaling option. Leave the rest of options by default.
- Click the Apply Global button or press F6

This will force PixInsight to work at normal dpi resolution.

Thanks!!

That fixed it  ^-^

Should have mentioned it only affects the workspace, not the images themselves, but you probably already knew that.

Best,

Jim

Hello,

I have the same problem with the new version. I am currently using 2 monitors, one with FHD and one with 1680x1050. I tried to disable the automatic scaling, but nothing happened at all. If I can produce some kind of log or debugging output that could help let me know and I will post it.

Regards, Denis

Hi Denis,

After dfisabling automatic scaling, you have to exit the application and launch it again. Anyway, this problem does not happen on small monitors in version 1.8.4.1170.

Hi Juan,

I switched off the Automatic UI scaling and completely closed PI. Then i fired it up again and took this screenshot (with options visible). The UI icons / text are still too big like before.

If you don't like the default font size, follow these instructions to change it by modifying the core style sheet file. It's very easy and gives you total control on the appearance of the core application.

Hi Juan,

thanks for pointing that out. The font is not what bothers me, it is more that the icons are now so big that STF is no longer visble in the icon bar like before. Can I also edit the icon size like that?

The icons are exactly the same size as they were in previous versions: 16x16 pixels.

I think you are referring to icons accessible through the ">>" button at the right side of the top control bar. This happens because there are too many tool bars visible on the top control bar. Simply drag some tool bars to different screen edges, or close some of them. For example, select "VIEW > Tool Bars > Zoom" to close the Zoom tool bar, which is rarely used. Let me know if this works.

I have just released an update with a new version of the core style sheet file (core-standard.qss). This version reduces the global font size from 10 points to 9 points on all platforms. Let me know if this improves usability.
