Processing speed
« on: 2014 August 05 09:11:50 »
I have an i7 8core, 16GB RAM PC and it usually takes me 2mins to make a star mask.
How long does it take u people? R there any adjustments that I am missing that can improve my speed?

Dimitris,

Just taking a guess here on my images, using a 12.5" RC and STL-11002, maybe 20-30 seconds at best but let me qualify that I suspect if you use a wide field setup with a huge amount of stars it would take a lot longer.

Dimitris,

Based on my experience, your time is not all that unusual.  I have two rigs, one similar to Steve's and I see times similar to his, and one where I shoot wide fields (and use drizzle) that can take considerably longer, sometimes even more than the 2 minutes you are seeing.  Lots of computing going on in generating those masks.

Best,

Jim
Really, are clear skies, low wind and no moon that much to ask for?

Run the PixInsight benchmark http://pixinsight.com/benchmark/ . The compute part should give you an idea about the performance of your system.

One way to help dial in the StarMask settings faster is to make a small preview which contains all of the star sizes you are after and then make that preview a separate isolated image by dragging the preview tab away from the parent image. For some reason I've found that StarMask runs faster on the smaller preview image by itself rather than when StarMask is applied to a preview that is docked with the main image.
