Best monitor for PixInsight processing?
« on: 2014 July 07 12:23:36 »
Hi - I am looking to upgrade my monitor. Any suggestions for a good monitor to use for astro photo processing?

I'm based in the UK and am desk space limits me to about a 24" screen.

Any thoughts?

Not sure if this would be the best in the 24" range, but the UltraSharp line of Dell is very good. I own the 30" one, and I am very happy with it.

The new PremierColor versions seems nice.

I like my ASUS ProArt a lot. I recommend IPS-panel monitors with LCD (not LED) backlights.

Thank you both. I've also had an Eizo monitor recommended. Anyone had any experience with those? They do seem a lot more expensive  >:D

I think I saw that brand in some biomedical targeted monitors. Way more expensive. In large format monitors, the top brands (for an affordable price) were Dell and HP. I have an HP LP3065 at my office and the Dell U3012 at home. Both are excellent, but I would recommend the Dell line more. Also, there is a new ultra HD (4k) version from Dell that may be worth considering.
24":  http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&sku=860-BBCD

And the 28", which is cheaper also: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&sku=210-ACHO

Eizo and NEC make high end monitors for professional graphics applications.  They are expensive but very accurate.  I have a 27" NEC and it is lovely to use.

I have two 24" Dell UltraSharp, one PremiumColor. Both is good but the Premium is from my point of view excellent.

I am using a seiki 39" 4K monitor. The real estate is immense but the high resolution creates issue with image repoduction, images look different on the Seiki than they do in other LCD monitors. I find myself having to check images on two monitors.  Still playing with the settings. It is extremely sharp, maybe that is the problem...

Thanks for the advice. I've been looking at the Eizo Colour Edge monitors - I like the idea of a built in sensor checking the calibration automatically (pretty sure I can't defend the extra cost of automated calibration - that's an extra few £100).

There are two monitors - one for about £720 which has an RGB gamut and is 1920x1200, the second £450 with an sRGB gamut and 1920x1080. There is also a gaming monitor FS233, which is supposed to have a very accurate sRGB pallete for about £280.

Any thoughts on whether a wider gamut is useful, or is the additional pain not worth it - my wife will also use the monitor and won't be pleased if she has to muck around with the colour palette to see her photos...

Hi,

I have been using the Eizo ColorEdge 22inch (CG222W) monitor for the past 2+ years. It is probably discontinued now for bigger and better things.
One of the specifications I liked about the monitor was that it came with a illumination specification- they come with no more than 5% variation across the screen. (They include a paper with the measurements for your monitor when you buy it.) Less expensive models often do not have this spec- and I disliked the idea of ignoring/correcting gradients that are not in the data. The colors are fine and it has been a good workhorse - being on basically 24/7.

Thanks, Adam.

I'm leaning towards the more expensive CX240. At the moment, they are being sold at a discount in the UK to make way for the CX241. I don't think the increased specs of the 241 are of much interest to me (99% vs 97% aRGB coverage and no fan) ,and I'd rather have the £150 discount.

Glad you like your monitor so much.

Colin, I bought a used/minty Eizo and was very disappointed. Not their top of the line, but pricey. At least in that one instance, it did not live up to its stellar reputation.
Best always, Warren

Colin!
 I am using 2 Eizo Monitors S2402W
24" Widescreen-LCD Monitor 1920x1200 side by side. I am very satisfied with them.
Link: http://computer-monitors.findthebest.com/l/275/EIZO-S2402W
User Manual: http://www.eizo.com/na/support/db/files/manuals/S2402W_um/Manual-EN.pdf
Would recommend them  also because of 1200 Pixel vertical. Most of the
Monitors today offer only 1080 Pixel vertical which is not really useful for image processing!
