Reliable way to calculate SNR over a preview box?
« on: 2014 July 10 16:42:24 »
Hi, I was speaking to an astrophotographer today who said that MaxIm DL has a plugin called "Exposure Planner" that based on a selected segment of a test exposure and desired SNR, it calculates how much imaging time you need to dedicate to the image to yield the desired SNR for that region. This is excellent as it takes a lot of the guess-work out of planning imaging targets.

I don't have MaxIm though, nor do I wish to invest in it. I'm 100% sure there's a reliable way one can calculate SNR over a preview box based on data shown on PixInsight, perhaps through the Statistics tool. Ideally a nice equation would be good, based on data I can take from the Statistics tool.

Thank you!

Well...ideally u would want something like that on the field and not on your workstation computer.
For example, Sequence Generator Pro has such a tool...also u can download Exposure Planner excels that by inputing some values gives u what u want

Agreed. I will look into Sequence Generator Pro. However, I've looked for these Exposure Planner Excel spreadsheets but I can't find anything through Google. Any links? Thanks!
