Mislabeled color channels?
« on: 2014 June 28 06:55:15 »
Last night, I must have missed a box and my B frames got labeled as G.  Can I just go in and change the filename?  Or is there further information embedded in the file?  Can I fix my goof?

Rename the file and try it. You should see it is just fine now. Have you looked at the FITS header assuming it's a FITs file?

Renaming the file didn't work.  It's a Fits.

Am I able to change the FITs header?  I noticed that the fits headers have spaces after the filter name.  Blue has 2, red has 4.  Will that matter?

Maybe I'm miss reading the post but right clicking on the file and using rename shouldn't have any ill effect on using the file. Say the file name is M58-002g.fts and you change the g to a b then you should be good. Let's start again. These are the original CCD camera files and the names reflect the wrong filter? Can you post an example and what you changed. If you look at the FITS header for each individual file you should get basic information like below:

The filter name is added by the software controlling the camera. Now if you assigned a prefix to designate the filter in the naming of the files this doesn't change anything about the image but the name. The FITS header should still have the correct filter used named unless you have that wrong in the program used to take the images. So I guess my question becomes, what box are you referring to in this statement? "Last night, I must have missed a box and my B frames got labeled as G." What program where you using and what are the names to these files?

Thanks for the help...

The box I'm referring to is the dropdown box for the filter label in SGP.  I won't call it a bug, but if you select a filter, then change it; the wrong filter name gets embedded in the file name and fits header.

When I bring that into batch preprocessing, PI puts it in the wrong channel even if I renamed the file.  I'm thinking the solution is in the fits header.  I just don't understand the spaces in the fits header for the filter.  Ie 'red    '      'Green   '.

I can't tell you about SGP but using MaxIm you can edit the fits header. There are two tabs and the second is edit. Whether you can do that in SGP I don't know but you should be able to. The other side of this is not using BatchPreProcessing and do it manually.

Thanks...  It looks like your filter label has spaces as well.  PI is where I noticed it.  Just didn't want to break any files.

You don't need to worry about the spaces nor the single quotes, PI will put them in for you.  Changes to the Fits header requires the image to be saved otherwise you lose them.
