PixInsight update fails
« on: 2014 January 03 21:08:26 »
Just loading PixInsight on my new laptop using Win  8.1

Program loaded fine and the updates were downloaded succesfully. When the app is closed to load updates and then re-start I get the following error:

Unable to install updates: Can't execute the PixInsight Updater (stage 1) application.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

Make sure that the installer is not blocked by the antivirus/firewall or windows security policy. Do you have administrator privileges?

Thank you. That was it, Windows 8.1 defaults to disabling administrative privileges unless one deliberately enables them it seems.

When I clicked "Run as Administrator" it worked fine after restarting !  thanks.

Yes. Setting Run as Administrator allowed it to install but the doc updates can't be installed

Can someone help me with this?

The software  update works fine when run as admin, which was my prior problem, but now the documentation update gives me the error dialog when restarting.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Jim,

This is a very strange error that should never happen under normal conditions. You (your Windows user) don't need administrative privileges. The updater application is always executed with administrative or "elevated" privileges through User Account Control (UAC), irrespective of your user's privileges. Possible causes of this problem include:

- You have UAC disabled or customized in some nonstandard way.

- Your user does not have write permission on the local temporary folder (c:\Users\<your-user-name>\AppData\Local\Temp). This would be very strange, but theoretically possible.

- Your antivirus/firewall software is interfering with PixInsight's update system. This is also strange, but we have seen this kind of problems in a few occasions.

I hope these hints can help you to find the cause of this problem.

Jim,
Did you install PI as one user, and run it as a second different user? I recently saw some strange errors in this situation, but did not yet investigate further.
