Annotations not happening
« on: 2014 April 18 20:31:10 »
It appears to me that most PI users use annotation to search a database to obtain labels for objects in their images. But as I look at the Annotation process window, it appears to be designed to place user-created text annotations on the image. I found some instructions that said to click on the image and one should see a display of the text from the Annotation window on the image. This is not happening here. Am I misreading the function of the Annotation process?

PI version 01.08.01.1092.

There is an Annotate process and an AnnotateImage script. You need to use the script (Script\Render\AnnotateImage). This script requires that the image has been previously solved with ImageSolver.

It's nice to know about the ImageAnnotation script, but I was actually just looking for an easy way to paint a few labels on objects that I recognize. What is the function of the Annotation process?

Hi Gary!
You start the process Annotations
Enter the text etc.
click with the left mouse butto into the image, the text will be visible there
you can move it around, also the pointer
when it is ok - you press the green execute button (right beside the execute triangle)
and your text is fixed.

I do have a video on my homepage for this, BUT it is in Austrian/German only
http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/57910417/Video01_BTJ.mp4
(the Annotation starts a little before the middle of the video).
It starts with "Insert an Image in the Image", than comes Annotations and finally
how to produce a gray border around your Image.

Hope something helps...

Gerald

Sorry to be so slow getting back to this thread.

Gerald, thank you. On my machine, the left mouse-click has no effect. I'm guessing this is a problem with the Mavericks operating system, which seems to be named appropriately. Unfortunately, recent OSX versions of PixInsight require Mavericks. I will have to learn how to post a bug report.

But it is nice to see how it works in the video and to learn about the ImageInsert script and much else.

Re: Annotations not happening -- Problem solved

A canny friend had the solution:

"Remember that the view of your image onscreen is much reduced, so a ‘normal’ font size, like 12-point, is tiny on the image.  Also, the default color is silvery-gray, so it does not contrast strongly with many images.

Try selecting a color that will stand out, like red, and increase font size to, say, 72 point, so you can find the text to verify that the tool works."

This worked for me. Thanks to all for your interest.

I spoke too soon. The problem has returned even after resetting font size and color and restarting PI. I have posted a Bug Report.
