You have to install VS Express 2012 too, so E2013 will load the compilation tools from that release, and flawlessly will work with the older project. If you update the project, most probably it won't work, giving you compilation errors.

Thanks,
But I am a little bit confused. Do I have to install 2012 then update to 2013? Or somehow install them side by side?

I think that either way should work. I installed first VS2013, and then VS2012, since I was unable to compile with the updated projects. Once I installed VS2012, VS2013 runned smoothly (no need to launch VS2012, just have it installed).
