in the end i did not trim the panels down. while processing it i realized the SNR in some of the panes is too low, so i think i'll go back and get some more data and then re-start the process.

Thanks, good ideas.  I finally got it to work by deconvoluting thje problem image and more stars were recognized.  I thought it was a good image by eyeballing it.

Hard to get the backgrounds equivalent.  I think I also need a bit more data. 

In any case, thansk for the suggestions, which I'll note and I'm sure I'll use.
