Image artefacts in mosaics

Hi, I have a problem when using the Gradient Merge Mosaic tool, the final image has artefacts not present in the original panes.  The individual panes have been preprocessed and stacked with DSS and look clean but in the mosaic the smaller stars have dark pixels adjacent to them making them appear square at normal resolution.  I am using default settings on the Star Alignment tool with 2-D surface splines as the registration model with distortion correction and frame adaptation options checked.  Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Try StarAlignment>Interpolation>Pixel interpolation>Bicubic Spline. If problems persist, try reducing Interpolation>Clamping threshold slightly.

The default Auto interpolation sometimes adds artifacts around small stars.
