Spectroscopy work flow for newb please?
« on: 2013 August 03 11:13:48 »
Hi Guys
New to the PI and the forum!. I`m currently trying the trial version of PI and fairly new to imaging DSO`s but my main interest is spectroscopy and wondered if someone could suggest a workflow I could try for processing spectra in PI please?.
A typical shot would comprise a single star with its spectrum taken using a Star Analyser like this one attached  of P Cyg maybe 20 fits would be taken and stacked and the fits run through software to produce a plot of the light lines (emission) and dark lines (absorption).
The aim is to bring out the light and dark lines in the spectra which indicate elements such as the bright peak in the spectrum in this example which is H alpha.

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve!
PixelMath in PI allows the display of a Profile
of a horizontal line in your Image.
Have a look at this thread. There is a Video Tutorial available and
also the 2 line PixelMath Expression can be downloaded from my Homepage.
The link to the thread:

maybe this helps

Hi Steve,

I think Gerald's idea of a `scan line' in Pixel Math is probably the most straightforward way to go, in PI.

If you haven't seen it already, you might want to check out Tom Field's "RSpec" software:

Tom was at AIC last year, and I thought his system looked really cool! I would enjoy experimenting with it.

Yes thanks for that Marek, I have Tom`s Rspec and very good it is. I think I might have not explained what I`m looking for adequately ;-).
I have the software such as Tom`s to create a profile from a horizontal spectrum such as the one above, what I was seeking from PI if possible is a way of bringing out the dark and light lines from the spectra I suppose what I`m looking for is a way of making the light lines brighter and the dark lines darker if that makes sense. I would liken it to trying to bring out the dust lanes of a faint nebula for instance and I`m assuming that somewhere deep within PI is a way of doing that, or maybe not ??.
Regards
Steve
