PixInsight 1.8.1.1083 Ripley Released
« on: 2014 January 25 15:58:02 »
Hi all,

A new version of PixInsight has been just released and is now available to all users: 1.8.1.1083 for FreeBSD, Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.

Build 1083 is mainly a bugfix release. It fixes some potential risks that we have addressed with the maximum priority after the previous 1.8.1.1079 release.

Consequently, we urge all users to update their installations as soon as possible.

How to Install the Release

This version is not available through the update system. You have to download the appropriate installation package(s) for your platform(s) from our Software Distribution system:

https://pixinsight.com/dist/

Simply uninstall your current version and install the new one:

FreeBSD and Linux: PixInsight installation packages are gzip-compressed tar archives (.tar.gz). To install one of these archives, extract its full contents on any directory, preferably on one located under your home directory. Then become root and run the installer program from a terminal. For complete information on the PixInsight Linux/UNIX installer program, see this forum post:

http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=6336.0

Mac OS X: Uncompress the .zip archive to get the PixInsight.app application bundle. It can be executed from any location, but we recommend copying it to the standard /Applications folder, and optionally adding it to the Dock.

Windows: We provide standard Windows installation packages. To install one of these packages, launch the executable file and follow the instructions. Once installed, you'll have a new entry on your Start > All Programs menu (or equivalent item on Windows 8), namely PixInsight Platform, where you'll find an option to launch the PixInsight Core application. The installation also includes an uninstall utility.

Bug Fixes

Some internal file management routines posed a risk of accidental file truncation, as a result of a regression. Although the risk was very small, this bug has been assigned the maximum priority. This problem is now completely fixed in build 1083 of the PixInsight Core application and build 654 of the PixInsight Class Library (PCL). We have released both versions today.

Information on New Features

* The PixInsight Core application can now inform automatically about new versions requiring manual download and installation (such as this one for example). This feature has been suggested by several users on this forum.

* The Windows installer adds a new option to the PixInsight Platform folder of the Start menu (or the equivalent item on Windows 8) to run a new instance of the PixInsight Core application. This feature has been requested by some users on this forum.

i am still seeing really slow behavior from SubFrameSelector on OSX. per-image time seems to increase exponentially. mschuster said it could be a problem with SFS itself but he's out in the field and can't look at it.

do you have benchmarks for PJSR that might expose this problem?

Yes, I confirm that even this latest realease under OSX 10.9 runs Subframe Selector painfully slow...

Hi

I just installed the new release and all of the documentation disappeared.  Normally it automatically installs with the updates, but it did not do so this time.

Documentation is never included in installation packages; it is always distributed as updates.

Do you have automatic updates disabled? Go to Resources > Updates > Check for Updates. There are three updates that you should receive.

This is a confirmed bug. Happens on all platforms.

I'm working on it; see this post.

I would add that also the FWHMEccentricity script suffers the same problem. Actually it looks like PI freezes...
Thanks!
Best,

Do you have automatic updates disabled?

Hi Juan

The three updates did download automatically.  Turns out that was not the issues.  The settings in Process Explorer had changed with the update.  There is a small double arrow at the bottom right side of the Process Explorer that controls the documentation window.  Its default had changed to "off" with the new release.  Once I clicked it, the documentation windows started to pop up again.

Thanks!

Bill

I'm finding that the little popup dialog advising that the just downloaded Updates will be installed upon Close of PixInsight is actually popping up BEHIND the main App Window in 1.8.1 (also believe I saw same in 1.8.0) running on Win7Pro64.  Minimize the main App Window or start to Close the App, and there it is...
