OK, I switched over to M106 and the galaxy stacked alright.  I guess there were just too many overlapping stars in the cluster.  I guess eventually I could figure it out, but I am after the principle that thisworks and it seems it does.

I do not like how the image came out with a lot of vignetting.  I will go back to my original flats rather than a CCDStacker master and try to generate a new master first... I have a lot of ploblems with LP and skyglow and this is hard to separate from a flats problem for me.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

So have you tried DBE to adjust the background? See http://www.harrysastroshed.com/pixinsighthomenewbie.html and look at the DBE video that Harry has done for more information.

Yes, I have tried DBE, but I have to say that my best results are with Gradient Exterminator in CS5.  I am using a trick: when I select the DSO, inverse the selection, then run GE 3 times with increasing fineness of the correction.

I just ran this on 14 images on M104 stacked with PI and it came out well (for me).

I think I will try DBE again now that I have a bit more experience.  I wonder if I can deselect the DSO also in PI.

I have some underlying issues insofar as I have changed my imaging set up so I have to collect some new lights to try all this.  I am in a very LPed area new San francisco...
