PI Update Process Changed?
« on: 2013 March 14 23:40:21 »
I was reading that a Mac OSX update had been recently put out, designated RC4 (I think)... but neither of my OSX PI machines have notified me of an update on launch, and when I manually do an Update request, the dialog says there are none to download.  My PI programs are at RC3 at the moment.

Was RC4 generally released, or has the update process changed recently (like in the past week)?  I see a couple posts mentioning RC4, so I assume it has been allowed into the wild.  Just trying to determine if I have a new problem, or am just impatient :).

You need to download and install it from the software distribution site, see http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=5325.0. Major (whatever this means) updates usually dont come via the update system.

Ah I didn't realize it wasn't a streaming update... thanks, Georg.

I'm so used to PI updates just "showing up" when I launch that I forget there's another more formal process for "major" updates. So does that mean RC4 is considered an "upgrade" instead of an "update"?

More or less... RC5 is on the way :)

Normally, I send a massive email to all PI users when I release a new version. I am breaking this rule with 1.8 release candidate versions, as I'm concerned about the possibility of tiring the people out with so many releases.

Speaking only for myself, Juan - every PI update I've ever seen address real and meaningful user issues, so I for one LOVE the constant debugging and polishing you and the team perform on PI.

I can think of several other software products that update rarely, and when they do, old bugs remain unfixed while new ones are added, and menu items are randomly changed around or renamed resulting in confusion and frustration among users.  I never know whether to even download some of these worthless updates, as they often take the product backwards.  Not something I'd EVER like to see PI become.

As long as the updates make the product better, then I say - "Let them come!"
