Noise statistics, help needed for confused newbie.
« on: 2013 January 20 05:47:37 »
I am trying to change settings in ImageIntegration of the final preprocessing stage to obtain the best image I can before further processing. So I thought I would be able to use the noise estimates produced at the end of the integration and also run the NoiseEvaluation script.

But I am having trouble inderstanding what the numbers mean, take for example the results from two different settings for the same image below (A & B), which is the best regarding SNR ? I am pretty poor at math, so please go easy on me :) I have search the forum for answers on this, but anything I found just confused me further. :-\

I have only been using PI trial for 4 weeks and just bought the program yesterday.

The image is the final stage integration of 51 subs after preprocessing with darks, bias and flats. Taken with a DSLR, wide field shots with 300mm lens.

After final integration: A

Gaussian noise estimates:
?sR = 2.080e-005
?sG = 3.581e-005
?sB = 1.658e-005

Reference SNR increments:
??s0R = 6.0642
??s0G = 6.5255
??s0B = 5.4076

Average SNR increments:
??sR = 5.4614
??sG = 6.6129
??sB = 4.7944

SCRIPT: Calculating noise standard deviation...

* Channel #0
?R = 2.080e-005, N = 2105765 (9.96%), J = 4

* Channel #1
?G = 3.581e-005, N = 5145111 (24.33%), J = 4

* Channel #2
?B = 1.658e-005, N = 1830275 (8.66%), J = 4

After final integration: B

Gaussian noise estimates:
?sR = 2.552e-005
?sG = 3.970e-005
?sB = 2.034e-005

Reference SNR increments:
??s0R = 4.9564
??s0G = 5.9186
??s0B = 4.4081

Average SNR increments:
??sR = 4.4637
??sG = 5.9978
??sB = 3.9082

SCRIPT: Calculating noise standard deviation...

* Channel #0
?R = 2.552e-005, N = 3201085 (15.14%), J = 4

* Channel #1
?G = 3.970e-005, N = 5885862 (27.84%), J = 4

* Channel #2

Thank you,

Mike
