Comet Holmes: a decent version
« on: 2007 November 27 16:23:08 »
Hello,

first, thanks to all who responded to our pic of comet Holmes published in APOD. Thanks also to the people who responded in the astrofotografia.es forum.

We have now a decent version of this work. I think we must do a better noise reduction, but for the moment the result is by far better than the one published some weeks ago:

http://datastore.astrofoto.es/holmes_lamadrid_peris.jpg

The pic is at 100% resolution. Some words on our work...

The resulting image is NOT a result of any copy and paste technique. The different exposures, as always, were superposed linearly (as explained in my last tutorial in this forum). The darkening of the central coma is given by the "bubble effect" of the dust envelope.

About color... We have processed this las version using wavelet techniques in both the luminance and chrominance components of the image. As you see, this new version has a redder inner coma. That's because the wavelet techniques have removed the cyan veil of the outer coma, revealing the color of the dust. But, as you see, the inner jets of the comet remain blue.

Well, that's all. Hope you like it.
José Luis and Vicent.

This is the best resolution I have seen in all of the Holmes images posted so far.  Magnificent!

Hello,
It really is a magnificent photo, as I said in the first version, the color is dazzling and the resolution of the interior of the comma ...Fascinating.

I can only imagine that this will be the defining image of this comet as it begins to streak out of view.
