Pre-Purchase Question - Version Upgrade Cost
« on: 2012 July 07 07:16:40 »
If I purchase now, will there be an additional cost to upgraded to Version 2?   Will that cost be pro-rated based on date of purchase of previous version.

Thanks

So far all updates etc have been free, see also http://pixinsight.com/faq/index.html 2.13 . Buying PI, in my opinion, this has been exceptionally good value. You may also read Juan's answer (Juan is the main developer of PI) when some users suggested a different business model http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=4375.msg30691#msg30691 .

Thanks Georg:

I read that FAQ and it is why I posted the question above.  That FAQ discusses v1.x and I want to know about the cost of migrating from v1.x to v2.x.

Meaning, if I purchase v1.x now is there a cost to upgraded to v2.x, and is that cost going to be scaled to the dated of original purchase of v1.x.   Or, will it be a straight upgrade cost for all?  I want to decide whether to buy now or wait.

Hi Kathy

This is not an official answer, but it may help you:
PI has a long cicle timerate. We've being with 1.7 for several months, and I guess that 1.8 would be ready in the next 2 months. So, it may well pass over a year, or a year and a half, untill we'll see the end of the 1.9 era (at least, in active development... It shoul be updated to fix bugs for a long term). I think that it is a pretty reasonable time to not worry about differencial upgrade fees yet. Maybe new users of the 1.9 releases will get a discount.
Of coourse, only Juan's word is the official response, and this is just a guess of his plans. :p

I would recommend to buy now. Nobody knows when PI will go to 2.0, but 1.8 is supposed be to be released real soon now, so based on the usual release cycle 2.0 is probably months or even years away.

Hi Kathy,

Welcome to PixInsight Forum.

When we release version 2.0, the upgrade price for existing PixInsight users will be proportional to the time they have been using our software. For example, a user who purchased his or her license a few months before we release 2.0 will have access to the upgrade at no cost. A user who bought a license in 2010---just a hypothesis; the mechanics of these calculations have not been decided---will have to pay the full price of a 2.0 license.

Version 2 of PixInsight is unlikely to happen before the first half of 2014, perhaps later. Many important things are going to happen and change drastically in the world of desktop applications. Adapting a large and complex cross-platform application like PixInsight to new development paradigms requires a huge effort.

I'll try to add this information to the FAQ page as soon as possible.

To Carlos, Georg and especially Juan:

Thank you.   I can now make an intelligent decision - which is...Buy Now!
