Using PixInsight LE for Non-Astrophotography
« on: 2005 July 18 18:05:09 »
Hello to all. I just registered and am new to the world of astral photography. I was wondering how well PixInsight LE features, such as à trous wavelet transform, SGBNR and SCNR, would work for detail enhancement and noise reduction in regular non-astrophotographic type photographs.

Using PixInsight LE for Non-Astrophotography

Hi Russ

You may use PixInsight with common pics without any problem... and perhaps you'll find that the power of PI will allow you to reach better results. Almost all the features included in the Limited Edition are general Image Processing tools. The only special case is SCNR: it was developed thinking on astronomical images, where there are only few times green objects. In common pictures it is not the case; you have a lot of green in nature. Anyway, if you are sure that there are no red, green or blue objects, you may try SCNR, propperly setting the parameters.
À Trous wavelets will work very well when enhancing selected features (at the given pixel scales). I tried it with B&W pics with results by far better than unsharp masks.
The same is true when using wavelets and SGBNR for noise reduction purposes. They work the same way as in astronomical images. Just one recommendation: use an iterative approach to obtain better results; i.e. use the Wavelets+SGBNR combo several times, each time reducing the noise a bit further. Don't be too much aggressive or you'll loose details or sharpening.
