Cannot select a view for Histogram Transform
« on: 2012 March 11 08:59:25 »
OK all, this may be ridiculously stupid, but I'm new to PI and trying to evaluate in the next 45 days, I've heard great things about it.

I simply can't figure out aspects of the UI.

I have a FIT image... I'm trying to apply a histogram transform to it (initial stretch).  I have the image open, and the Image Transform tool open.  In the Image Transform tool I see <No View Selected> in the dropdown.  I click the drop-down, I see my image listed, click on it... nothing happens.  I am unable to select the image to have the Histogram Transform tool "see" it...

This seems incredible simple and dumb, but it is so simple I have no clue what I could be doing wrong.

Thanks,
Jon

EDIT:  When I load a single image, it loads a window with "_COMPRESSED_IMAGE" appended to the image name.  But in the histogram tool it only shows the file name, so when I select that nothing happens.

If I load another file, the original file then becomes available in the histogram tool with "_COMPRESSED_IMAGE" appended.

See the attached image.  In this case I loaded "NGC5982_For_PI_TestB", then "NGC5982_For_PI_TestA" then "NGC5982_For_PI_Test".  You can see in the histogram tool that it does not give me the correct name for "NGC5982_For_PI_Test".

Hi,

I'm pretty sure the histogram is updating just fine but all the data is on the left. Try zooming in. Also review Harry's videos about the histogram tool. If none of this works please post a screenshot with the image and the entire HT tool visible.
Best,

Thanks, my original post edited.

I cannot operate the Histo tool on the most recent opened image.  If I open another one, then the previously opened image shows up in the list.

PI appends "_COMPRESSED_IMAGE" when opening, but doesn't do this for the view selection in the histogram tool.

All these files were saved in PI originally before opening and trying to operate on them.

Hi,

I see three opened files and three files listed in the HT tool. That seems to work fine. Sorry, I don't understand what isn't working. If you have a file that doesn't work with HT you could upload it somewhere.

You could assign your own image IDs to the loaded pictures if you wanted but that should not be required.

Nocturnal,

Thanks, but I'm not being clear I guess.

There are three image files

Test
TestA
TestB

When I open each image, PI appends _COMPRESSED_IMAGE to the view name, i.e.:

Test_COMPRESSED_IMAGE
TestA_COMPRESSED_IMAGE
TestB_COMPRESSED_IMAGE

But the most recent image shows up in the tool view WITHOUT _COMPRESSED_IMAGE appended, so I cannot select it and cannot view it's histogram in the tool.  Here is a quick movie of what I'm seeing.  It appears to be a caching issue because if I open another image the one previous to that shows up in the list with the correct "_COMPRESSED_IMAGE" appended to the name.  Please note the "Test" and "TestA" filenames.

I cannot view the most recently opened file in HT.

I've tried to attach a screen-shot video, but I'm new to that, so not sure it worked.

i've never seen this _COMPRESSED_IMAGE thing. it must be some weirdness in the fits file handler.

here are a couple things you can try. one is to change the identifier for the image by bringing up the right-click menu and selecting Identifier... . change the identifier to something simple.

the other thing is that the HT tool has a view following mode. click the check box and then activate one of your views. if it's working right the HT should automatically switch to the activated window.

having said all that, i suspect there is a bug in the fits handling.

In looking at the FITS header, there is an entry

EXTNAME, "COMPRESSED_IMAGE"

So clearly that's where it's coming from.  I guess this came from ImagesPlus (though the FITS is 16-bit uncompressed, but who knows).  Interop has never been a strong-point of astro-tools in my experience.

I was trying to evaluate parts of PI, but I guess I'll just start from scratch from cal/integration on an example.

It would be nice if PI through an error if it couldn't interpret something, but it isn't PI's responsibility to cope with other vendor's output, so I get that.

Many thanks,
Jon

Hi Jon,

This is weird and there's perhaps a bug that hasn't been reported before. However, I need one of these images to analyze and fix the problem.

CFITSIO's tiled FITS compression (which is what these images look like) is supported for reading in PixInsight, but not for writing. There seems to be a related bug that leads to a crash upon writing these compressed images, which we'll fix ASAP. Again, I insist that having one of these files would be of great help to fix these problems.

Juan,

Thanks, I'm happy to supply an image/a few images.

When I get home I can ftp/upload them... do you a location used for sharing?

Thanks,
Jon
