PI will not accept my Activation Code
« on: 2012 March 03 04:57:39 »
I have PI installed on my main PC, no problem.

Today however, I tried to install it on my laptop, so that I can take the software to demonstrate it at my 'local group' meeting tomorrow.

I logged into the PI website, and downloaded a fresh copy of the Win 64 package, then installed it without problem.

When I try to activate it using my 'User Identifier' and 'Activation Code', the server rejects it as an 'invalid activation code'

I checked the code entered, double checked it, treble checked it , and tried multiple times to activate it, without success.

I have even tried changing the 1 for I, and the I for 1, but still no joy.

The user id and activation code are valid only once. All you need to do is copy the licence file generated the first time on the new computer.

2.7 If I have to replace or format my hard disk, do I have to re-activate my license?

Never. The PixInsight core application only asks for an online license activation if it can't find a valid license file. Your license file uniquely identifies you (the license holder) as a commercial PixInsight user. It is a very small file with the following name:

On Mac OS X and Windows:
pixinsight-license

On Linux and FreeBSD:
.pixinsight-license

and is located on your home directory (AKA folder):

On Linux and FreeBSD:
/home/<user-name> or /usr/home/<user-name>

On Mac OS X:
/Users/<user-name>

On Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user-name>

On Windows Vista and Windows 7:
C:\Users\<user-name>

where <user-name> is your actual user name on your operating system. If you simply copy your license file to the home directory of another machine you own, the commercial PixInsight application will run on that machine without problems. If you take the precaution to make a backup copy of your license file, then you'll never have to re-activate your license.

2.8 How can I install PixInsight on several machines?

You just have to copy your license file to your home directory on each machine; no license activation is required. Please read FAQ 2.7 for details.

Does it update that license file each time that it starts up or something?

I find that I have to copy it back and forth...

No. You have to backup it only once.
