Newbie in Forum & first image fully with PixInsight
« on: 2012 February 16 12:29:59 »
Hello,

This is my first message to the forum, and is also my first image fully processed in PixInsight. A months ago I tested the demo version of PI, and until now I don't purchase, this is a great software !!!

My first PI image is the Rosette (NGC2237) taken in narrow-band from a city (Barcelona/Spain). I used a telephoto Takumar 200 @ f/4 because with my camera Atik 314L+, I can take all the nebula at once.

Equipment
Takumar 200 @ f/4
mount HEQ5 PRO
CCD Atik 314 L+
Guide Refractor 80/400 + DSI-II + PHD
Capture Images Plus 4.25 (dithering)

The data:
Calibration + Register + Integration
LinearFit
Pixel Math to combine chanels
  R = Ha
  G = 0.9 * O3 + 0.1 * Ha
  B = 0.5 * O3 + 0.5 * S2
Crop
Histo
Curves
ACDNR
I try the MMT but unsuccesfully  :(.

H-alpha 21 x 900 s.
O-III     12 x 300 s.
S-II       17 x 900 s.

All tips & critics are welcome.

It's a good image but you've clipped the background too much, throwing away faint nebulosity. Try your histogram stretch again but keep an eye on the pixel counter that shows how many you are throwing away when you're moving the black point to the right. If that's not what's going on then your calibration is either truncating your data or flattening is darkening the edges too much.
Best,

Thanks to all for your comments.

I reprocess the image, and drop 0.5% pixels, and the result is much better. Also apply curves to enhance the highlights and ACDNR to minimize the noise. The new result:

Yes, I like this much better. I generally drop no black pixels on the first stretch and maybe a few dozen on the second one. You could try to create a luminance mask (extract Lightness), apply it to the image and then use Curves to increase the saturation. Your Rosette is a bit orange but it's an Ha cloud which is generally shown more red.
Best,
