Star alignment crash.
« on: 2012 February 18 03:27:04 »
Hi

I was following a tip from the PI forum about Star alignment. In star detection, I have decreased the maximum distortion to 0.68. As star alignment runs, if there is a problem image PI crashes. I check the output directory to see the name of the last good image then I remove the next image (as I am assuming this is where it crashed), run Star alignment again until the next suspect image crashes PI then repeat the process.

I think I know that this is maximum distortion crashing PI, because if I reset to the default value there is no problem.

Checking the rejected images does show ovaloid star shapes.

Don't you agree it would be a good idea to upload the offending image(s) somewhere?

Excellent. While you're at it you may want to upload the process icon as well. Come to think of it, you may just want to create a project and upload that. Of course in that case you'll want to start fresh, otherwise the project will become too large.

Firefox on W7 won't let me save the file so I guess you'll have to wait for someone with a Mac to try it for you, sorry.

Yes, it's odd. I click on the download button and select 'save file' and I never get a dialog to tell it where to save it. Too much fancy javascript. If only they would just put a true download link there but nooooo, that's too easy :)

Hi Jules,

I have downloaded your file on a Mac machine (it seems this MobileMe thing doesn't want to work on any OS but Mac OS X) and it can be registered without problems with StarAlignment. Since you have uploaded only one file, I have duplicated it, rotated with the Rotation tool and resampled it to 40% of its original size with Resample. Then I have used StarAlignment to register it to the original without any issue.

If you increase the maximum distortion parameter to 0.68, StarAlignment cannot register this image because it has tracking errors and all stars are elongated, hence SA doesn't find any star. This is normal behavior. However with the default maximum distortion value of 0.5 it works perfectly.

Hi Juan

You confirmed what I thought, it was working. The only problem I have is, it is not skipping or stopping it crashes! I will revert back to 0.5 and stop being so lazy and checking the files visually.

StarAlignment set at 0.68 works well, every file it has crashed at is a problem image.

Thanks!

Julian
