Error Message
« on: 2011 May 11 10:33:42 »
Have installed PI on new Dell Laptop(Win 7, 64 bit). All updates installed. When I left click on an open image I get a "PCL Win32 System Exception" error. See attached image of screen shot. When I close the error window by clicking on "OK" then the small read out window appears and won't close even when the error message closes. See second attachment image. After closing the error window, any time the cursor moves over the image the error message reappears. Generally the error dialog will close after the second click of the "OK" button, but eventually it won't close and the program must be closed with the task manager. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling PI but problem persists. Have PI  running on my desktop computer with no problems.

Hopefully there's an easy fix. Likely I've done something wrong during installation. Help appreciated.

I think this is caused by a crash in a module that can't deal with the pixel values being sent to it. This can be disabled but my install doesn't show this problem (also W7--64) and I'm running a pretty much stock config with notification enabled. Are you sure you have the very latest PI?

Hi Sander,

Yes, it's the latest version, .0652. No settings have been changed from default.

One other issue I forgot to mention in the original post and that has happened a couple of times: PI hangs up during the opening load sequence while it's apparently loading printer settings. Doesn't get past this point. I've had neither of these problems on the desktop computer which has been running PI with no issues.

Steve,

- is your printer connected via network? I occasionally have the same problem, see http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=2627.0.
- do you use a mask in your image? http://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=2950.0

Georg,

Does sound like the same problem you described regards start up and the splash screen. The laptop is on a LAN, connected wirelessly. The printer is always on and never used by PI. The LAN and printer haven't changed in several years and have never caused a problem during start up when running PI on the desktop. The desktop is hardwired to the LAN.

The other problem is more significant as it currently prevents use of PI. Different than what's described in the post you referenced is that no masks are involved. None the less, I tried Rojelio's workaround but this didn't work. The duplicated image still causes the error as soon as the mouse clicks on the duplicate. I have no background in computer programing so when discussions get too technical, I have difficulty understanding. None the less, it seems as though this error message issue might not be a bug as it seems that many others would have experienced the problem. Rather, I wonder if something in the software is corrupted on my laptop. Just have no clue how to figure it out so need help. Hopefully Juan will find time to respond. Perhaps V 1.7 will fix everything. ;)

In the readout options (blue caret on bottom tool bar) un-check 'readout data'->'broadcast...' . See if that stops the crashing.

In a related note the readout feature is very very slow on my laptop. When I move the mouse the cursor has trouble following. It's really only suitable for small movements I guess. This laptop has an i7-2630 (2 GHz quad core with HT) and discrete graphics so there's really no excuse for that. Too much happening in the event handler I guess.

Yo Sander, you are the Jedi Genius. :D  Unchecking "Broadcast Readouts" appears to have fixed the problem. So, what has unchecking this done?

Many thanks,

Well there's a misbehaving module out there that can't deal with the data your drags/samples are sending. Odd since it's not happening with me. But it did happen in the past so I remembered the fix. Not much jedi in that but glad to help :)
