moving windows around in PI isn't very smooth
« on: 2011 January 14 17:24:41 »

Maybe it's my imagination but it seems that PI has gotten more sluggish. When I pick up a window and drag it somewhere else the motion is not smooth. When I pick up an icon and drag it around the workspace it lags behind the cursor if I move too quickly. It seems this is new behavior but I'm not sure. Not going to install an old version to check this out. Even moving the mouse cursor over an image isn't smooth.  I can see it skip. Odd.

This is on a fresh W7 x64 install on an i7-920 with 12GB of RAM and a large SSD for the main drive, GTX-260 graphics. I mean if it's not smooth here I don't know what it'll take. I'll update the display drivers but frankly I don't think it'll make a difference.

When I run a compute intensive task the cursor also halts if I move it around. I don't think it should do that.
Best,

I am not having this issue. My PI desktop is quite busy right now and moving opened images or icons is smooth and fast.

I've noticed that window dragging issue too. Maybe the latest version is just more of a CPU hog?

I can't reproduce this problem on any platform. PI 1.6.9's GUI is really fast on Windows Vista x64 and Windows XP x86, as well as on Mac OS X, Linux and FreeBSD. In fact, the new alpha blending effects for workspace windows work smoothly and real-time fast on Windows. I don't have a Windows 7 machine at hand now, but the GUI was equally very fast in all our tests before the final release.

The Windows machines where I've tested PI now are an old Core 2 Duo (Vista, 1920x1200 resolution nVidia Quadro FX 550) and a vintage Pentium IV HT (XP, 1280x1024 Matrox Milennium), so on your i7-920 + GTX-260 it should be like an F-14 Tomcat flying over your head.

Could this be an issue on Windows 7 and/or some particular graphics drivers? Or an issue with other applications? I know this sounds somewhat foolish, but I've seen some antivirus applications doing really strange things lately ...

That's odd. I can't reproduce it now. If it's a real problem I'll run into it again and see if I can figure out what's different.

I can reproduce it anytime - by dragging a window so it is partially off screen at the bottom - when I drag it back the bottom part of the window corrupts and follows the angle of drag - fine when you stop dragging, and it doesn't do it within the main program window.

I'm on Win7/64, Quad core Q8200 @ 2.33Ghz, ATI Radeon HD3800 gfx (512Mb), dual monitors, 8Gb ram.

I don't see that. Could be a different issue.
