Ha for Luminance Substitution Technique
Jack Harvey SSRO/PROMPT
01/14/08

I have developed a new technique for combining Ha to a RGB image.  This technique was perfected using PixInsight, however other programs that allow you to break down a RGB image into the R,G,B frames as well as extract the Luminance will allow this to work.  Once the luminance is extracted from the RGB and the RGB is broken down into R,G, & B a new combine of Ha,R,G,& B is made and the image given final adjustments with histogram, curves etc.  The technique is described stepwise below:

1. Process the Mean Ha frame with decon, wavelets or what ever you deem to get a good Ha image. Then mask the image and use ACDNR or a noise tool to smooth the periphery of the Ha nebula, somewhat aggressively. Adjust mid point with Histogram (see step 2).

2. Extract the Luminance from a processed RGB of the image using the extract channels, with L checked and a and b unchecked on the CIE button. Save this extracted Lum frame as we will re insert it with Pixel Math near the end of the processing. I did look at the Lum to adjust the histogram for the above Ha to be close to that of the Lum frame.

3. Now extract the R,G, and B frames form the RGB using the Extract Channels but this time the RGB button.

4. In LRGB Combination tool put the Ha frame in the Lum slot and the RGBs in the correct slot. Add a slight amount of saturation (lower the sat slider 15-20%) and start with about 50% of Luminance contribution using the slider in the upper right. You can run several diffferent percentages of the "Lum" which is really Ha and see how much is best by comparing the output images.

5.  Now recombine the HaRGB with the previously extracted Lum frame using a 50%-80% of the Lum with Pixel Math.

6. Make final adjustments with histogram, etc.
Example:

Hi Jack!

I think you have improved your first image.  :D

I like the new color of the nebula, sensible different in two zones that now is clearly visible ,while in the first image all the nebula has the same "pinkredish" color.

Good Job.

Sergio

Thanks Sergio.  I think this new work flow has some promise.  I have redone 5 images and all were improved.

Unfortunately I no longer have the comparison set of images.  Sorry.  But if you have your master frames made this is a quick process to try?

Jack
I am (finally) taking a serious look at this...
Normally I just "hit" a red button at the top to extract the Lum..
Can you expand on yr step 2 advice...?
Where I am I going (what tool am I using) to do this (different ?) Lum extraction...?
Thanks

Dave

Dave your way is fine.  Or use channel extract tool and L is the only channel enabled on the L,a,b button

OK...
Seem to have some feedback in the Yahoo NB group, including N Fleming.
Many use fractions of the Ha in the R,G AND B...as well as in the Lum (whether real or synthetic.
This makes sense to me.
Star matching is an issue, but can be dealt with...
I also stumbled on B Franke doing this...

So I am still all ears.

I guess adjusting the luminance slider in "HaRGB" combine is "sort of" adding Ha weight to the RGB data...?
Is this correct ?
The advice I am getting (from some) is to switch to PS....

Hi Dave

Take a look at the SelectiveBlend process I uploaded (see at the development subforum). It will help you try percentages of blending with the RGB data. If the luminance is synthetic, you don't have to do that again, just find the factor you like with the RGB channels.

Carlos or anyone-
Can the processes over in the development section be run with the (32-bit Windows) core PixInsight (nondevelopmental) version?
Thanks

Hi Jeff.
I already uploaded the Windows 32bits compilation. All you need is to download the proper file for your system, and then go to "Main Menu->Process->Modules->Install Modules..." and launch it. Search on the folder were the library is located, and install.

PS: There is no "nondevelopmental" version of PI. All have the same functionality, including the trial ones.
