Sander,
Looking forward to your PI presentation at MWAIC. Hoping I can catch you- teach me! I'd like to show HDRWT to the gang at RAIW/PATS when I do a workshop in September.

Hello guys, Happy Father's Day. I'm off (at 3AM!) to my NMSS observatory, then Alcon in Tucson.

A couple questions pressing on my mind though. It seems to me that the default settings of the process dialogs were very well thought out. IOW, great starting points, as opposed to '0/Zero'. Would Juan and others agree? As a fledgling, I've tried several routines at defaults w/ excellent results. HDRWT, DDP and RR-L Decon come to mind. Obviously the dialogs are very powerful because of their flexibility, but it's nice to be able to get results right out of the pocket. This gives the user confidence to push ahead.

Thanks for your thoughts Juan, et al.

As a generalization -True.  Some tools do need adjustment as does one of my favorite Grey C (noise reduction).  Here is from another thread:

I have a generalized WAG approach.  I find that the sharpness almost always needs to be reduced from the default.   Sometimes to 50 and sometimes much more.  I also lower the Amplitude and Noise scale considerably., starting in the 10-20 range.  I obviously use Previews to save time.  I first use a preview that is zoomed in several hundred to  fine turn the noise reduction at a pixelated view.  Once I have found the break point (not overly applied) using mostly Noise scale and Amplitude, i then apply to either the image or another preview zoomed out to be sure I have a good reduction of noise and nice smooth image, but not losing any resolution.  Playing with sharpness at this point is something I will do.

So there is my wild ass guess method, which works for me<G>

I agree with Max that the defaults are too high.  I would pick a Sharpness of no more than 50 and Amplitude and Noise scale closer to 15 to 20???  Max and others may also have suggested defaults.

Thanks Jack! Well, if your's and Steve's Thor is a result of your wild a** guesses, I'm following your lead! I failed to state that of my two test images, one is Jim Misti's M101 L as shown in the HDRWT tut. Certainly, that highly-sampled, great shot responds very well to defaults in most dialogs. I forgot to metion the Star Mask which works equally as well as the others I mentioned last time. I think this is very smart programming indeed. With a platform as powerful as PI, it's great to have valid starting points rather than let fools like me have at it w/ no constraints! Looking forward to other thoughts guys, and thanks.
