Linux: PixInsight .deb and .rpm packages available
« on: 2007 June 25 14:27:25 »
Hello everyone,

Since the first Linux version of PixInsight was available, I've been working, in collaboration with Juan Conejero, in the creation of .deb and .rpm packages so that users don't have to bother uncompressing the original .tar.gz and running the application by hand.

The result of this month's worth of work is finally available in the PixInsight downloads page, along with the necessary documentation for configuring the package manager. Currently two package managers are supported, apt and yum, but urpmi (Mandriva) and portage (Gentoo) support isn't ruled out, and may be available if there's some demand.

.deb packages have been tested in a Debian unstable and two Ubuntu Feisty; .rpm ones in a Fedora Core 6. There's shouldn't be any problem when installing them in other distributions, although the system should be minimally recent. There are directions in the web page about how to partially update Debian etch and Ubuntu Edgy so that PixInsight runs on that systems. Needless to say, any report from the users will be appreciated, both in the case of success and failure.

I hope you enjoy them and, if there's some potential Linux user that didn't try the .tar.gz file, take a look at it now!
