histogram functions in 1.6
« on: 2010 April 26 19:17:49 »
I found an unexpected feature in the histogram function while mucking about over the weekend.  I had no idea that you could use the histogram this way.  I selected the blackpoint button and the white point button and found an appropriate  area in the image for each selection by clicking on them, but then for the midtone balance I really didn’t know where to select (so had a guess from the image.  Then I applied it to the image as a new instance and to my surprise I got the following image.  Is there a description or video(harry please note) showing this process in more detail or more importantly what to actually do?  for the record it is an image of NGC3603

I am intrigued - simply because I am not exactly clear in my mind what it was that you did.

Can you please try and describe the 'details of the steps' that you took - so that I (we) can follow your actions. It does not 'seem' to be something that I 'normally' do - but others may use these steps on a daily basis.

So, yes, I am intrigued.

Hi!

Yes, those readout modes have been since a while. You may set the black and white points very easily this way, and is very intuitive when you use the realtimepreview activated. Anyway, for serious astronomical purposes, I would discourage this use, for a more statistical approach based on histogram counts.
About the middtones readout, think of this button as a way of telling which pixel you want to become exactly middle gray (0.5). Again, this is more intuitive with the RTP.

Niall,
i was in the realtime preview mode and selected this blackpoint and then selected a dark region, then selected the white point and selected a bright "white" star (OK i know that this isnt the best thing to to - but i was only mucking about) but for the mid point i selected a section of nebulousity and continued to move the cursor about until i had found a mid point area on a histogram curve then released the pouse button.  it simply blew me away

thanks for explaining that Carlos.  The more i play the more i find - I will admit i have absolutely no idea sometimes what i am doing.  It was a pleasure to discover!
