combining different images of same subject

Hello there -
I have two groups of the same image, Messier 101. They were taken at 2 different exposure times. I have darks, flats and bias for each of them. What's the better way of combining them so I can get all the information possible?

I would calibrate each set separately, then register all the resulting frames, followed by image integration of all the frames.

Are the exposure times very different? If yes you might consider to calibrate each set separately, register together (so they are aligned with each other) and then integrate separately. Next use HDRComposition to combine them. This might bring out more details in bright parts of the galaxy.
