Opening fits files from ESO archive
« on: 2019 March 10 09:00:45 »
I downloaded some fits files from the ESO archive and was unable to open them with PI. Not sure what the issue is but probably something simple. I uploaded a screen capture of the error message. Advise appreciated.

It needs the fitsfile to find out whats wrong.
The fitsheaders on Nasa, SMOKA and ESO archives vary.
Each telescope has extended their fits paramater so many of them do
not follow the basic Fits standards because they use their selfwritten sw to interpret
their data....
So, without your original fits image no solution.
With your file, the chance to find whats wrong is higher.

That was my first thought. I tried uploading one of the files, but it was too big. I put a couple of the files in a DropBox folder. Here is the link.

Apparently the answer is a program call FITSLiberator 3.0 which is posted on the ESO website.

Hi Eric!
Could read the Fits Data with other programs but not with PI directly.
There are FITS Keywords in the file not expected by PI.
Importing the FITS File via other programs as TIFF into PI works - the data look ok.

Funny thing: the PI Script FITSFileManager can read and copy your Fitsfiles without error...

Sorry for having no better answer.

Thanks Gerald. I now have two work-arounds. It is odd that there isn't some universal standard for fits files Eric

Hi Eric, Gerald,

This problem is now fixed. It is a different manifestation of the same bug reported here:

https://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=13224.0

So these files can now be opened without problems in the new version of PixInsight, which will be released soon. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you for your patience.
