"Risky Temporary Folder" message
« on: 2019 January 25 05:28:52 »
I just installed the new 1.8.6 version and get this message on opening the program which I have not seen before. No idea if I need to do anything about it or not.
Thanks
Dave

Hi,

I had a similar message and I just ignored it.   I think it might cause an issue if you are part-way processing an image and want to get back to the same spot after the upgrade.

This is a nice warning to notify the users that their swap and temporary files may be erased from another application. Some of those apps (Dell, I am looking at you! >:D) promise a clean and optimized operation system but could cause loss of data essential for PI projects.

I just made a directory called swaptemp in pixinsight folder, added it to the global swap file options, removed the win temp option and applied. no longer get message and now in a safe place.
Also, I'm not sure if you'll have to do this but when I start pixinsight I hold down the shift key right click on the icon and choose to run as administrator. It seems I had a trouble accessing some file at some point until I did that not sure if it's relevant but thought I'd throw it out there

i would heed this message! this is what happened to every person who posted in the forum that they are unable to save their project.

it's great that PI warns about this now because it is important.

Please don't do that! Running a powerful application like PixInsight with full administrative rights is extremely dangerous, not just on Windows, but on any operating system. The only component of PixInsight that can be used with administrative rights (or as the root user on UNIX/Linux) is the PixInsightUpdater program, which is executed automatically to apply updates. Other than the updater, the rest of PixInsight must always be executed from a regular user account without permanent administrative rights.

The main reason for this warning, among others, is that by running something like PixInsight as an administrator you open a huge door to do anything, literally, to your system.

That's the right solution, but please use a directory under your home folder, where your regular user—that is, when you are not an administrator—, has full read/write permissions.

Ok so I did change the directory as recommended by going to preferences> directories and network, removing the temp folder from the list, creating the new directory path, then apply global and I don't get the warning any more when I open PI. However after changing it when I go back to the directories and network process the temp folder is still the only folder listed there? The new correct folder only appears if I click on "load current page settings". What is happening there?

That's the normal behavior. The Preferences process isn't different from other processes in PixInsight. When you launch the Preferences interface for the first time in a core application session, it loads a new process instance with its default set of parameter values. This happens because a process is a self-sufficient, completely independent object in PixInsight.

If you want to load a Preferences instance with the set of current preferences settings, select EDIT > Global Preferences from the main menu, or click the Load current settings button on the Preferences interface. If you want to load a default set of parameter values, click the Reset button. This is valid for all processes.

It appears that I have to set up the new swap directory separately for each additional instance of PixInsight.  Is this correct or have I missed something?

I first introduced the "trial version" and used "Risky Temporary Folder" messageAfter that, after obtaining the product version PixInsight and running the program, I did not display the warning message.

However, just in case, first create a special folder on the hard disk with the name "C: \ PixInsightSwapFiles" on the Windows PC, select Edit> Global Settings from the PixInsight main menu, In the [Directory and Network] section, select "C: \ PixInsightSwapFiles" in the [Swap storage directories] section.
