BPP error--no signal??
« on: 2018 November 18 14:32:54 »
I'm running BPP and getting the following errors:
** Warning: No convergence in MRS noise evaluation routine - using K-sigma noise estimate.done
97 FITS keyword(s) extracted.
*** Error: /Volumes/ASTR WIN/Pictures/Astronomy/Lights/NGC1499-1/Ha-1/Test/registered/Ha/NGC1499-1_180sec_1x1_2018-11-15_frame10__Ha_c_r.xisf: Zero or insignificant signal detected (empty image?)
<* failed *>

It doesn't seem to matter which sub I use- I get this same error message. When I do a Star Alignment and then an ImageIntegration, bot of these processes work just fine, but yet BPP fails. Noise reduction is disabled, but I have also tried it with a settings of 1 and 2--both failed. Looking at the subs, and obviously there is data there.
If it helps, when I look at one of the registered images, it has stars, but all the other data is gone!
Any ideas?

this is usually caused by bad calibration. check the _c files and see if there is anything there.

maybe double-bias subtraction or darks that don't match and were not scaled...

My _c files look the same too--some stars, but nothing else. I don't _think_ I've done anything differently. I've done this many times before, so I'm really perplexed.

definitely bad calibration if the _c files are clipped like that; if CMOS camera check if gain matches between the lights and the darks/bias.

Well Rob, it looks like you're right as usual. I got a new laptop and although I _thought_ I copied over all the settings, clearly I missed this one. In my darks, the gain says 139, and in these lights it's set to zero. Ugh. Is there any way to recover from this, or should I just scrap the files and start over?
PS--When I got my camera, I was told to use the "Maximum dynamic range" setting, but I subsequently changed it to "Unity" and I had no such problems. Any idea why/why not?
Thanks again!

well i guess you can take some new darks/bias at gain 0 solely for the purpose of calibrating these lights and see what happens. worth a try anyway.

as for unity, etc., i only know what i have read about cmos cameras, outside of a DSLR i have never used one. i assume Unity is shorthand for some gain value though, so seems like setting the camera to unity is equivalent to selecting a gain.

Unity is short for a gain of 139--obviously! ;-)
Thanks again!

Unity is the driver gain setting that gives you 1 ADU per electron.

Cheers,
Rick.
