Print images using Linux (Fedora 27)
« on: 2018 October 28 04:18:06 »
Hello all,

several attempts getting decent prints from commecial services failed. I put the topic on Cloudy Nights and some came up with ink jet photo printer in the Eur 500 range. A short check showed they all need Windoze what I don't have and don't want to go to. Now, is there a decent printer that I can attach to my linux box (Fedora 27, Cinnamon) and print right from PI? Can anyone recommend something? And I must admit I am afraid all the cartriches get dry when I don't print for half a year, just because I don't have anything decent to print. Is this still an issue?
Thanks for your help!

best

Hi there,

Well - "printing from Linux" . . . in my experience that has always been a troublesome issue, so much so that I resorted to creating PDF documents and then printing these from Windows. And, that was for just about everything, not just PixInsight images.

What seems to be 'missing' is the Printer Driver (so easily found and installed in a Windows environment). Perhaps there are Linux gurus here who know how to resolve the issues, but I have more or less totally given up on Linux altogether.

That said, as far as printers are concerned, I have always had tremendous results from all of the Epson Stylus Photo printers that I have purchased (I have just bought the XP-830 and it was around the £100 / $100 / €100 price level, and the results have been stunning).

I have just searched the Epson website, and they (like many other manufacturers) do not provide any support for Linux.
Cheers,

Sorry for coming in late - this is first post (new member) - so I'm just adding this for anybody who might be looking for an answer (assuming you've already found your printer).

Check out this website - http://www.openprinting.org/printers/ - it's part of the Linux Foundation and has a large database.

I have used HP, do provide drivers for most of their printers, the exceptions being the cheap 'Winprinters' but the bulk of those can be accessed with drivers from http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/ -if you find these drivers useful please donate to the developer (it's not me!)
