Very basic mask question
« on: 2018 September 02 09:01:45 »
I'm slowly clawing my way up the PI learning curve, nut now I'm stumped about masks. Here's my scenario:

My test target is M27. I have a OSC camera, and have successfully processed camera subs all the way through calibration, cosmetic correction, debayering, star alignment, and integration, ending up with a nice color image.

I also have imaged M27 through H-a and O-III filters, and processed those camera subs through the same steps, for another nice color image, but with few stars, as is common with NB filters.

I want to copy the stars from the color M27, and add them to the NB M27.

Why do I want to do this if I have a good color image? Because I might not b able to get a good color image. NB filters block moonlight, and allow me to image under bright skies. I can capture the nebula with relatively long subs, then take a few short subs to get just the stars, mask and extract the stars from the bright background, and add them to the NB image.

I opened and duplicated the color M27 integrated image that has lots of stars, and ran the StarMask process on it. A mask was created, and I dragged that to the clone. I'm now looking at a red mask over the M27 clone, with little black dots where stars are located.

QUESTION: What do I do next? How can I use the mask to isolate and capture just the stars, and save them image to a file I can later StarAlign and combine with the NB M27 image? I want to "paste" the stars into the NB image, but I don't know how.

Thanks for help with this next step.

--- Mike

Here's a thread on combining the stars from an RGB image with a narrowband image: https://pixinsight.com/forum/index.php?topic=9493.msg60616#msg60616
